    deep water fish ID

    Hi all,
I'm usually the first one to jump on a fish ID thread, but this one has got me stuffed. Our closest guess was Eastern foxfish, anyone sure???
This fish came from deep water off Ballina today.
At first it looked like a pigfish, probably in that family.

    3 photos to follow,

Actually Im about 90% sure its a chinamen. Catch Plenty of them in the Barrier Reef (Whitsundays, Townsville, etc). And it really does look dead in your first photo, so I hope you didnt eat it, just to be safe. Do some research and cross check the photos with yours about the Chinamen Fish and "ciguatera" disease.

    Not a Chinaman,

the Grant's guide claims foxfish to be wrasse family, the fish looked very similar to a Pigfish, just the wrong colours.
He also claims foxfish to be very good to eat.

We live in Ballina, a long way from the reef & the fish was caught in very deep water.
After owens post I'm sure , but thanks for the concern,
    cheers
