just tie your main line straight to a set of gang hooks. no sinker if there is little current or some lead if there is a bit of a current ( if their not bitting at one level go up or down in sinker size).
give the rod a good cast and continue to feed the line out aswell
and a good burley stream always helps

Hi dazzwa, this is my rig for chaseing knobbies etc off shore.
I use 3 x mustard 7766 6/0 hooks ganged together with a swivel in the top hook eye. Sinker size varies depending on depth and current, but never anything bigger than a 10 ball.
If drifting I usually will drop down a third of the way to the bottom, then slowly start letting out line, keeping the reel in free spool all the time with my thumb controlling the descent.
Nothing better than when a knobby smashes you as youre free spooling.
I dont use a level wind, so when I get a fish as I start the retrieve I lay the line across the reel spool a couple of times. This way I can drop straight back to that depth on the next drop.
Gave up bottom bashing years ago, the better quality fish are nearly allways higher up the water colum.
Also to lazy now days to wind up pounders from 80 meters.
    Hope that helps.
Attatched a photo of crew holding an average fish, should be able to see the rig Im talking about
    Regards
    Brian

I tend to use a couple metres of leader and a small sinker and a circle hook. Leave the reel in freespool, wait for it to speed up and give it a few secs before I toss the reel into gear. I don't use any swivels.
