    Offshore Lizards

Just wondering if you guys get any lizards when you are over sand offshore ?? Down Sydney way its very common to go to around the 50M mark and you will more often than not get a lizard feed. They even refer to it as the flathead grounds but it stretches from way north to way south of Sydney.

I never see reports up here with them ?? Are they a very common catch ??

    Re: Offshore Lizards

Two weeks ago whilst drifting over reef 18km E of the Jumpin Bar, we obviously drifted across a sand patch and picked up a flathead in 65M of water.

As for the rest of the day, unfortunately this was the best fish we got.
3M swell in 20knts did not make for a pleasant day.

    G'day
Yes, we used to pick up the odd flathead off of moreton over sand. Deepest was 70m by memory. Not in plague proportions but they are there.

I caught a big flathead in mid water just inside the banks off mooloolaba... I was live baiting for sailfish at the time

We used to catch a lot of them in tassie ... there were patches in sand areas offshore.

I havent heard of any flathead grounds in QLD ... but surely they must be somewhere.

Maybe we just dont try in the right spots here ... everything seems to revolve around the reefs.

Maybe the people that know about them just dont say anything.

Maybe different specoes like offshore and the ones up here, inshore?

    Cheers

Catching to many flattnuts is usually a good sign that you have drifted off the reef onto sand & its time to move back.

Yep Gunna, it was one of those days ....

A sailfish followed up the first bait jig with livies on it ... laid on its side at the side of the boat, then disappeared - didnt see another sail all day.

We caught one flatty, and a 6 ft Bronze Whaler on 10kg, that stubbornly wanted to keep going under the boat (we had to keep driving away from him) - all while in amongst the flotilla of about 30 boats which were all parked on the bait school.

At least the weather was nice

    Cheers

Yeah got a Flathead ground here in Coffs similar to the one you describe. Goes alright if you miss out on a feed at the northern reefs. Saved my behind many a time.

Usually in 125 ft of water. Drop the paternosta rig down, hit the deck then start winding. Caught a double header early in the year. both 50cm and their mate followed him all the way to the surface. Scooped him for another. i classed it as a triple header. Sand Flathead un the grilla go alright with garlic butter.
Why is all the good weather around on weekdays?
