    Fishing Canoes

    Hi all

I have been eyeing off canoes lately and am thinking of investing in one for fishing. The Tango Angler looks all right. Anyone with experience of fishing canoes who could make a recommendation?

Ah, so you're thinking about coming over to the dark side

Kayak fishing is fantastic, once you start looking into it, you'll realise how much choice is out there. I can't say I've heard anything about the model you mention in your post so I'll just give you some feedback on the main ones I know of.

Firstly, you need to figure out what type of fishing you want to do. If you plan on doing offshore fishing, then you'll need to put some serious thought into the kayak you buy.

Viking kayaks as mentioned are quite good. The Tempo is the old model, lots of deck space though tend to be (relatively) sluggish in the water and with high sides, tends to catch the wind. These are commonly sold with an electric outboard motor. The Predator is the most recent release. It's apparently much better and gets good reviews and is quite fast on the water.

Malibu (of which I have an X-Factor) has some good yaks. From what I know, they're probably the most stable yak on the water however this does come at a price, they're slightly slower on the water than some. Deck space is excellent and they have probably the biggest hatches of any kayak. You can actually fit a fully grown adult in the hull!

Perception make a kayak called the Swing. By all accounts, this is the fastest yak of it's kind on the water. Very smooth looking craft with my only critisism being small hatches. This hasn't stopped people catching big fish though with some of the biggest I've heard of being caught from a Swing.

There are numerous other popular ones and many more not so popular ones so all I can say is do your research. I'm not sure if recommending other forums is allowed on here but there is a site called the Australian Kayak Fishing Forum (www.akff.net) that has a wealth of information pertaining to kayak fishing and you can ask anything and no doubt someone will know the answer.

Thanks all, I'll check them out.

I'm after something easier to cart about than the tinny for trips to creeks, inlets, sandbars and river banks not otherwise accessible. I'm not planning to go offshore. I have had a good time drifting lures in a friends canoe before around Bundy and figure I can do the same thing here.

I have been thinking about a kayak for awhile now, although I dont they build one that I could get my wide load into. They look like they are so much fun and brilliant excersise. There have been so many reports from ppl who have been fishing from yaks.

I think they are a terrific way to go for all those swallow and hard to get to places. Good luck with your searching chris.

Once I get back to work fulltime and anya comes back from germany and has a job again I will seriously look into it mate. There are lots of places I would like to try but dont want to risk doing any damage to the boat or motor.

It's worth checking out the Hobie range of kayaks as well. A lot of their models come with the mirage drive (peddles) system which allows your hands free for fishing. I have the Sports model, a cinch to throw on top of the car, and plenty of room for my gear. If you are over 6 ft tall and weigh around 80 kg plus, the next size up (outback) is recommended.

Heres a link to one of the SE QLD dealers.

    Chrisfish,
I have a 15 foot Roscoe canoe which has both single and double outriggers, comes with a sail and two electric outboards. I have found this to be an excellant platform, with both outriggers, for standing up and casting plastics and lures. This is for sale if you are interested.
