For spots to fish up there you should get yourself a copy of the Northern Fish Finder (I think its called) from a newsagent. gives Gps marks all around northern Oz. We usually go to Bramble reef, find a bommie in about 15 metres of water just off the reef proper and anchor up on that.

When I'm up there we bottom bash for trout and have floaters out for mackerel.

For the trout (and other reef fish) we use 80 lb handlines held firmly about 30cms off the reef. We use 6/0 Kahle hooks (next time it will be circles) with a barrel typw sinker straight down to the hook. Use large baits and hang on. If you are fishing with a rod you tend to get bricked on the reef unless its a "broom handle"

For the mackerel we use floaters. I have a charter special on a 10-15 kg Uglystik and start with pilchards and then load up with grenadiers when we catch them on the bottom rigs. Mackerel go nuts over them. See pic

I have a mac rig with a stinger that I'll post in a minute or two. (2x 6/0 tru-turn hooks and a #1 terble all held together with swivels with about 2 metres of 40lb shock leader to about 20 cms of 44lb single strand wire. For the pilchards all the hooks are pinned int the bait. For the grenadiers I just put the top hook through his back and dangle the other two.

Hope this is of some use

correction: just read my post and tried to modify it - too late

Of course I meant that the live bait is a fusilier, not a grenadier. I always call it the wrong way 'round
