Hi No Fish, I live in Hervey Bay and have fished the western side of Fraser Island many many times with good results, even if it blows up you can still fish and crab safely in the sandy straits with mixed bags of esturay fish and mud crabs at this time of the year. The mud crabs start running just south of Ungowa station in amongst the sheltered mangrove islands and all along the gutters good catches of Tailor can be had and large summer whiting caught on blood worms only. Flathead are about in numbers but for a good feed i stick to mud crabs and whiting, tailor (for smoking) and chase average size cod along the ledges at night with large green back herring caught in a good old trusty bait net. There is a shipwreck at Ungowa that is covered in oysters and they go great just heated on the hot coals from the fire. About a 20 minute trip by boat and Kingfisher Bay Resort is available for supplies if you run out. Mackeral frequent the area as well as huge Golden Trevally further north at high tide on sand bars, as you travel further north you come to reefy places like Little Woody Island and at this time of the year Blue Parrot (Venus Tusk Fish) go on the bite at night using small crabs(Ghost or Island) for bait and quite often you pick up medium Spangled Emperor and Red Throat Emperor, but saying that i usually just stick to the esturay fishing in smooth waters with a nice catch of really edible seafood. Anyway I hope this helps a little and best of luck on your holiday.

    Cheers Kizzy.

I was there a few weeks ago and did very well in the gutter system just north of the Maheno wreck. My friend dragged out a nice jew from there as well measuring around the 80 cm mark. I was busted off so many times I was starting to get frustrated by it all. You will have fun there I am sure. What we did was drive along the beach looking for nice gutters. They seemed to be better at outgoing tides nearing low tide. Hope this helps.

    Re: fraser island

We were there 2 weeks ago and found any gutter that opens up to the ocean held larger fish, and alot of medium one were caught north of waddy's point. Also the larger ones responded better to slugs retrieved at speeds.
Whole pillies was the main bait used by the majority of fisho there.
Prolly be back there in early oct, but we'll be north of ngarla rock.

    Hi No Fish,

I have just come back from Fraser and had a ball. We got most of our fish at dawn and dusk. Most of the better quality fish (50cm +) were caught in several gutters south of the exclusion zone at Indian head. We fished all the way up to the cape but the fish were quite small or none existent.

I have enclosed a pic of one of the better ones we caught while we were spinning. The tailor was caught on a slider lure and was just shy of 70cm.

Nice Fish and pic Jus, but not many people know that on the inside of the island you can catch fish slightly smaller in size and get a feed of crab in sheltered waters without expensive camping fees or salt water abuse on your trusty vehicle, but each one to their own they say hey and it would be great to hit the Fraser Isand fishing comp at some stage; my budget simply doesn't allow me to be able to afford it so i'm happy in the sheltered waters for the moment with a nice feed of crab and fish and a beer around a camp fire.

    Cheers Kizzy
