The great Jack challenge!!
I like many of you have not yet caught a Jack.
My challenge is to anyone out there who has yet to catch one to target them and catch one and post the pic here.
I am just interseted to see how people not experienced in this form of fishing, see how long it takes someone to get the first. Starting fathers day.
We don't know if the stories are true, you do, if you lie you can only be comfortable in knowing YOU are the d***head.
Happy fishing!!
When the pic is posted I think an area is also needed. No i don't want GPS marks, Brisbane, Gold coast. etc.

Re: The great Jack challenge!!
Challenge accepted.
These bl**dy red fish drive me insane.
After years chaseing them on all types of techniques in all sorts of locations on all sorts of tides at all hours of the day or nite, tally stands at 2 undersize rats, and some awesome wipe outs. Mind you, caught moer estuary cod than you can poke a stick at, so I know Im fishing the right areas.
Missus cant understand how I can fish all day in the stinking heat or all night with the mozzies, and catch nothing, and still front up for more next week.
Maybe this summer will be the one I crack it.
Regards

Re: The great Jack challenge!!
Get yourself some mack-tuna or mullet, find a nice snag, anchor about 10 metres away and berley into the snag. Then drift your baits in with the berley (hook and pea sinker) and if they're there you should find out about it.
Snags like this are good
cheers,

Re: The great Jack challenge!!
Well I have been trying for Eight seasons now to land Uncle Jack. Tried all the tricks live baiting years ago then went onto lures. Many lost fish and lures but I did it last weekend. Fishing for Bream in a spot say between Bris and Sunny Coast I finally got him. Caught on 4 pound Fireline it was a very good test. Heres hoping now I've broken the curse there will be many more.

Re: The great Jack challenge!!
Good idea Sean. I finally caught a Mangrove Jack back in February this year. We were trolling with a hard body(herring coloured)lure and bamm. It was fun to catch. It was 40cm and the tastiest fish I have ever eaten.
I too will start to chase Jack especially when we have a friendly comp going with the ausfish fraternity.
Here is the photo of my one and only Jack of 40cm(boy their scales are hard to remove)
Cheers

Re: The great Jack challenge!!
Yep!! I'm with you Sean. The captain has 2 to his name, so i need to catch up. Saw him catch the first one in the cannals in Pottsville after the flood last year. I was so excited!! Can't imagine what I'll be like when i get my first. May need to hone my skills a bit. Love fishing but don't usually catch much. Plenty of MackTuna in the freezer.
Good Luck, happy Jack hunting!!

Re: The great Jack challenge!!
Caught my first a few years ago inTalle Creek went the next night with a mate to the same spot and claimed 3 all between 2.6kg and 3.5kg biggest going 62cm. Have not caught one that big since, fishing the same hole regularly and same nights (moon tide etc), it is so frustrating. Will try a few different approaches this year to lures. Bring on the hot weather.

Re: The great Jack challenge!!
hi guys ,well for those that want to be succesfull at targeting these easey to catch fish you have to understand the area that you target them in,as they dont rely like strong current they do hide in structsure and in lees or etties waiting for some thing to come there way,but when the tide slows they will venture out to get a feed and understanding there cunnigness will go a long way in hooking a jack,as I have found if one has been hooked before they become a lot more cunning and harder to catch and that you will have to learn for yourself as I have to master the art of catching jacks, but I will tell you that when its time to chase them it time for them to spawn.jack reach maturity at around 7 to 12 years and to ive caught one at 5years old ripe mature female at 530mm,that was the last season I fished seriously for them to give DPI some frames for research and to find out a bit more about what I wanted to now about jacks, and I fish totaly oppisite to all the rest in the way i place my snelled hooks and the way I place them in a livey or dead bait allways head first and place your lead hook under the shin behind the gills,so the hook lies along the body and point up, not thought from one side to the other and the tail hook just put though the tail normaly, if your livey dose not look right it makes them weiry, tides around 2mts I have found best and good water clarity water and up creeks they dont like competiction from vermon and last of all not all jacks are equall in fight or behavour but once you suss things out you will have more fun and bragging rights. ps this thing wont attach my spread sheet stats so you miss out on that.
