Mulloway lure advice

Hi guys,

Great site you have running here firstly

Im a mad keen mulloway fisherman down here in SA and im keen to master them on lures.I put in hundreds of hours each year in pursuit on my favorite fish using livies and have done well but im looking to crack the code when it comes to luring them...from my experince im mulloway fishing ,nothing comes easy!
Im currently building a collection of hard bodies to compliment the hundreds of sp's i have bought , looking for that one lure that will do the job consistantly.

The only success ive had so far is when they've jumped on lures targetted at bream.... although i lost a big fish 2 years ago jigging a 150mm squidgy fish.

So if i could get peoples ideas on lure types ,colours and retrieves that have worked for them.? Im luring around lit up bridges mainly... main bridge im luring at atm has lots of froggies swimming in the lights so ive been trying to match the hatch but still no success yet...

With the hards im using a very slow with lots of pauses retrieve with lures like bombers , yo-zuri crystal minnows etc ,also experimenting with 70mm bibbless minnows...With the sp's im casting out and very slowly lift-drop along the bottom basically how i would with bream.Have been using 100mm squidgey fish in silver fox colour mainly.

any help to improve my catch rate on lures would be appreciated,

I know a guy that uses Livley Lures " Mad Mullets" Deep with a lot of success so i think you have a few options.

I pinned one that I didn't land on the big 6 inch gulp swim fish in the sarding colour, I put up a post with it. On the weekend we got a schoolie in the seaway on a 3" gulp jerk bait in the smelt colour. Other popular ones I have heard of and have stocked up on are the tsunamis in 4 or 6" in the mullety looking colours. Also the storms with the same holographic guts in em.

Jew on lures, they can be frustrating. Off the beach with a squid bait I am always in with a good chance but with a SP it's was another story. I spent 2.5yrs chasing them before landing one. Hooked and lost a few off breakwalls / boats but took a while to hold one up for the camera and I can tell you getting that monkey off my back was sweet. In that time I spent many trips with people I would class as good jew lure fishermen that spend more times getting them than missing out. One thing I have learnt is that there is no real lure type that is important, more so flavour of the month for the fisherman.Put the lure in front of the fish and retreive it right and you are normally on the money. 5inch jerk shads seem to account for many up to 10kg with the bigger 6inch storms/squidgies taking the majority of the bigger fish in my opinion. Another lure that has worked very well for a few fisho's is the river2sea SP's with a plastic bib and trebles that have a very distictive swim action and look very similar to mullet. with the normal SP's the way you are going with sinking it till it hits the bottom, lift a couple of quick jerks and then repeat seems to be what most jew fisho's do. The other lure that has been used for years up this way is the red and white feather type used mainly during a flood runout off the bars.

Sounds like im doing the right thing anyway , just a matter of time i hope.I know how frustrating they can be on baits let alone lures!.

Ida= Im not overly familiar with outlaw lures to tell you the truth... any links to the particular lure you're using?.

I have good access to a large range of lures working at a tackle store here in SA... So ill have a think about the suggestions that have been made...

I was using one of the berkley hb's today actually..it has a good slow rolling action at slow speed but i may need to slow the rise rate on it when i get some sticky weights...needless to say i caught bugger all! We have a bloodworm run on at the moment here which tends to slow the fishing somewhat.

So the guys using hb's , are you just using a straight slow retrieve or throwing some pauses in there as well?

Mate I use RMG Scopian 150 that diveto about 3 mt on a slow retreve, that works for the area that I fish. I feel that colour doesn't matter that much aslong as you pull the lure just past it's nose at just the right speed and the right depth

G'day BoLeX, I thought I heard my name being mentioned(not a problem). It all depends on what the jew are eating down your way as this has a big bearing on what lures you need to use. If they are munching on mullet then use something that resembles that bait.Chucking a big lure into a school of whitebait will get their attention very quickly. I have found that in summer silver patterns are best and in winter go purple. rule of thumb is in summer the fish are on the bottom, in winter they are just under the surface hunting when the water temp reaches 18 degrees,(around northern nsw anyway) so go deep in summer and shallow in winter. Water clarity has a bearing on this as well. You can catch big jew on lures in the middle of the day if the water is turbid. In winter I average one jew an hour and summer one jew for every two hours fishing consistently but pick your moon and tides precisely. SP,s work well after dark or in muddy water with white being a top colour in a 150mm length and use a slow twitchy retrieve. I think bigger is better. I have been trying to keep my hardbody lures that I use to myself but too many people have been paying attention, but use a lure about 190mm long and rattles do help. 2 metres is a good diving depth in cooler water and lure speed is important to impart the good vibrations. Next trick is, don't use a heavy mono leader, it will stuff up the lure action, go plastic coated wire.There is a lot more to it than this but I hope it assists you in some way, cheers, steve.

thanks for that info rabbi ,definetly gives me more to think about.... are the big hb's you're using sinking,suspending or floating lures?

Im almost considering using a oargee plow next time i head out!

I use floating lures, especially around rocks. Does not improve your catch rate but will give you less chance of losing your lure. A lot of people wind their reel harder to get their lure back out of the water near rocks, all this does is drive them deeper. stop winding and let them float to the surface and flick them up. I went out tonight and found a school of mullet on the beach that were jumping out of the water all over the place. I had 5 casts with a hb and landed two jew, 15kg and 17kg. took me a while to find mullet that were being harassed and showing signs of disturbance but I had two jew within an hour after dark. look for the signs, it's no use being where the fish aren't. Don't give up on the lure fishing mate, persevere and it will become easier and it's great fun,cheers,steve.

BoLeX, one thing I forgot to mention with hb's is don't worry about jerks or pauses during retrieval as jew home in on the constant vibration of the lure. If you get a hit without hooking up, stop winding for about 3-4 seconds and then retrieve as normal, this will promote a second attack from the jew thinking it has wounded it's prey. steve.

Great disscussion guys - all very interesting. I would like to chime in and ask Rabbi if he can be a bit more specific about moons and tides for Jew. I'm still to land my first one and am very keen to do so this winter. Am planning a boat trip (sp's) soonish with a friend and try to get to the beach (dead and live baits) in the evenings so any input re baits etc is greatly appreciated. Cheers
