I tried SP's for the first time last friday, and would you have it it only took 15 min to catch my first fish. The best part was that it was a jew, only a schoolie but nother the less a jewie. This blew me away! These soft rubber things actually catch GOOD fish, not to say the likes of bream and flathead are not good but i chase jew and it's just not that easy most of the time. I did let this fish go, sounds crazy, but the adrenaline rush was a much higher peak than taking this fish home. I only caught 1 more fish for the day on SP's (caught a good feed of whiting on worms) but it was well worth trying.
I'm no expert but i think there is a couple of key factors to this style of fishing and that is you need to target fish in the same way you would on bait, e.g you won't catch fish if your not fishing spots that don't hold fish normally. SP's are still a bait not a miracle worker. And the other key is working out the rig to get the SP into the fishes face.
So from a beginner's view don't give up if they haven't worked for you yet, maybe you just expected a liitle too much, go back to basics and i'm sure your rod will be under load before to long.
Thanx Timbo and fish outa water
Actually, I will have to give it a go again as I have about 12 packets of SP's. I went crazy after I got that dvd from canoodle and was all pumped up about catching fish. But each successive trial was a flop, so each time I am out in the boat I get sore arms from casting and retrieving. My bigger SP's that I have used(only 3 to a packet)all have been bitten in half and I did'nt even feel the bites. So SP's are a very expensive way to go fishing. They each were bitten off right behind the exit of the large hook. At least I have 3 spare hooks and funny shaped sparkling sinkers now that are molded over these hooks.
Does anyone use a wire trace, as if these bites I did get just happened to have come back and taken the head part too, then they would have bitten through the mono leader.
So can you use wire tracing, even a short one?
Cheers
Rose
The only problem i could see with wire is that you are taking a little bit away from the natural look and action of the SP. Did you know that you can slide a stinger hook in the tail tied to the main hook with a snell.
Are you using braid to fish these, my guess is no or you would of definetly felt the bite.
And the other key is working out the rig to get the SP into the fishes face. (Quote)
Hi Tim, I live in Cairns and mostly go fishing in one of the many creeks and rivers up here. I mostly target Mangrove Jack and Threadfin Salmon.
But end up trolling HB lures and have lots of success. I had never thought of a snell to the main hook? So does it just dangle or do you insert it into the tail somewhere?
I have now bought 2 light spinner reels and filled them with braid and 2 whippy FireWolf graphite top of the range rods. They feel super and I have been practising my SP movements in the pool. They look good, but I am not a fish.
Could you take a photo of your stinger and snell and how you attach the extra hook to your SP? I am a quick learner and will take all and any advice to improve my skills.
Cheers
Rose
IS THERE A LIMIT............ as to what sp's can catch.
Being a relative newby to sp's................
I still shake my head at what I catch, I my mind its is having to key as to what plastic/ rig to use where. Other than that Idont think there is not a fishout there that can't be caught on sp's
hi rose
i use a bait needle and heavy braid for the stinger , only really do this on my my larger sps (5 inch and over)when needed
use a wire trace with swivel and clip swivel for pike , doesnt really alter the action of the lure , but some fish are put off by them(dunno if yours will be)
for casting if dont really use any jigheads over 1 oz usually 1/2oz and 3 inch shads,
have a look at what fry are about or match your sps with the color of your hbs that work
another thought is hbs run at a set depth , so potentially try and control the depth of your sps the same way
hope some of this is of use
tightlines
Hi rose, diawa rods are great, i recently bought 1 of the procaster z's, 4-12lb and i had a firewolf from years back. you made a very good choice (as far as i'm concerned). Ill' try and get the photo up tommorow for you, but the hook should go inside the sp. Have a look at the TT lures web site and there is a couple of info pages from good fisho's on how to catch certain species. 1 of these talks about the 6" sandworm, in this they talk about the stinger hook. My mate is going to show me a better way to tie it and this is the 1 i'll post for you.
Did you know that you can troll your sp's. Try adjusting the lead for depth. Also i rig it like this, Put a small barrel or bean sinker say size 2, then a swivel, 30cm of leader to a 1/8 or 1/6 jig head with sp, this makes the sp jump natural with the sinker disturbing the bottom.
If you think it looks good in the pool it will work, confidence is a big key, don't use something you don't like. Try little twitches this looks great with this rig, thats how i got the jewie.
Anyway hope it goes well and i'll try to get the stinger rig up tommorow.
im surprised no-one has mentioned the yellowtail kingfish, and sweetlips, red emperors ,amberjacks, cobias, they still go as crazy on sp`s as they do on bait.Have you ever tried the super snapbacks Van ,they are very durable(im talking stretching a 4 inch bait to about 20inches,takes alot to break them, ive seen and heard of sharks and mackerel getting caught on them, the snapback is made from a special rubber called cyber-flexx,ill include a photo to prove the stretch,i still had a good 5 inches of stretch there but i reckon youll get the point
I currently use a white snapback on the highest hook on a 3 hook paternoster rig that i use for bottom bashing. Snapbacks dont have much action, but I still manage on most outings to catch at least one fish on the SP. My best fish is a 6kg jewfish. Most common is sergeant baker. I have also paternostered a snapback off a handline fishing the reef off Lucinda and have caught several trout on this rig.
I think with bait, the least productive hook on a paternoster rig is the highest one. I definitely get less fish on the plastic but I dont work the lure at all and it is over a metre from the bottom, so it does really well. I like to have it there to be sure that I always have something down that can catch a fish even if the pickers have cleaned my bait up.
