circle hooks for jewies?
Is it common practice to use circle hooks for jewies when using live herring or mullett, and if so where is the best place to insert the hook.
One frustrated jewie hunter.

Just bumping this for you (and me!)
I've used circles the last two or three times out - had runs but no hookups. I think I'll give them a rest. I'm no expert on jewfish, but my experience has been that they either woof the bait down and you've got them hooked or they fiddle with the livie, take it for a run without any intention of eating it. The livie comes back lightly slashed just like when a mackerel takes a bait for a ride. I've had a lot more success with a paternoster rig on the bottom than with my floatline rig. They tend to BITE the paternoster and run with the floatline. These are big fish outside - not sure whether soapies are the same.

Re: circle hooks for jewies?
When live baiting for jewies in a river, they tend to take the bait for a ride... Usually making sure that it is perfect to eat (e.g. no strings attached). One thing for certain though is that they will always smash a soft plastic without any sort of hesitation...
I always feel circle hooks are good to use... You really need to remember not to strike the fish!
Also, hook the livie the exact same way you would have with any other hook... I always pin a livie through the nose if there is a bit of current, alternatively, pin one through the back in still conditions with minimal weight. I only use this technique for small baits... If I was using a slimie, yakka or mullet... I would use a rubber band...
Good luck

Re: circle hooks for jewies?
Try one of these rigs, used on poddies, pike and squid, 7-8 in live bait, circle or penetrator hooks.
I personnelly give or let them take 15-20m of line before even thinking of setting the hooks.
