    My turn!!!!!!

Um Jpart10 you just let everyone know how inexperienced you actually are with that stupid comment!!!!

I would rather deal with 20-30 knot winds any day of the week offshore than the same breeze in the bay. The bay has and will continue to claim boaties who underestimate the bays dangers. Its it very shallow in places and this combined with a wind against tide situation stands the sea up in no time at all, ive been on a 11m cat that took a wave in the bay over the fly bridge imagine what that would have done to a 15 foot cruise craft

If you take the bay lightly it will bite you on the @rse garanteed!!!

You think he was a joker just trolling for bites? I sincerely hope so. If his response is indicitive of his approach to boating on the bay, then he'll eventually end up as a statistic.

I've been caught out in some crap before and being a Pom you can appreciate the weather over there. In my years of boating I have never experienced waters like the bay when it's wind against tide in even moderate winds. The chop comes at you from all angles. As Ian says, give me 20 to 30 offshore anyday in preference to 15 on the bay.

I've set off from shorncliffe in a whittley 650 sea legend in flat calm and within 10 minutes was in strife and it took me another 45 minutes to find the shelter of Mud. I don't think that I'd be reckless or lying in concluding that if I'd been in a 15 footer that day, I'd now be pushing up daisies (that's if the council allowed my deckie to water my plot)

Familiarity breeds contempt but just be aware that what you are familiar with can often change to something that you are totally unfamiliar with.

As for being a "girl" ............if you met my deckie you would appreciate that I would be quite rightly proud to be counted as the same as her.

im guessing since jpart hasnt had any more to say he might already be at the bottom of the bay some where but seriously don't take the bay so lightly , i dont get out in the bay much but from the times i have been out i know it can change in a matter of seconds . I have heard so many people that travel say that it is one off the worst bays in the world they have been in . 15-20 knot winds is plenty enough to sink your 15.8 footer .

And have the flaires on hand

Mate i'm sure i speak for all of us, we don't intend to ridicule you or scare you away from the site, however, just be careful what you say on these sites. Some of these guys head out 2-3 times a week and live very close to the water. They know the water's very well and also know how ugly it can get.

I don't get out as often as i like to, but can say from experience that i'd prefer to be offshore on a windy day then be in the bay. The wind vs current pick up the chop to incredible speedy peaks at times, and it can't compare to the rolling swell found offshore, or the breakers in a bar.

Take it easy and be cautious, always keep an eye on what the weather is doing and if you do get caught out, seek shelter from an island, don't try and be a hereo and fight your way through as you may come out second best.

Well im back from Mortan bay it was 15 to 20 knots and i must say it is worse than expected wit 1.3 metre waves. But it was no real sweet on my boat.

Glad to hear that mate, but conditions on the bay are not simply about windspeed as others here have indicated. On another day you may go out with a lighter wind speed but the tide state, wind direction, and depth, may well present you with a more difficult set of circumstances. Enough has been said in this thread to indicate that to you so I hope you enjoy more safe and happy boating.

Another thing to be fully aware of in the coming months is the likelihood of localised squalls and storms the like of which have brought many to grief as was shown last year by the many well reported instances, one of which resulted in a death. These can spring up suddenly on the bay without warning, and even though I have a 6.5 metre rig there is no way I would venture out on a calm day if an afternoon storm is forecast. These "afternoon" storms quite often come shortly after mid-day on the bay, and having been caught once........I don't wish to venture there again.
