hello fellow fishers

at this point in time i am wanting to target mangrove jacks, but im not really sure wot stuff is the best , i have heard that live bait is good and lures r good but im

note sure does anyone have any info about- wot times i should go, or the tides
or wot type of lures r best .

can anyone help???

Hey Cam, Everyone will have their own prefered method for targeting Jacks Lures, Livies etc. The best Jack I ever caught went 60cm on the good old handline with a live prawn, A few weeks ago I was smashed by a good Jack around 40cm in 6 inchs of water on a 3 inch Pumkinseed Gulp minnow, Then today fishing Tinny Creek I got belted and snagged up by a freight train using a $4 K-Mart rattler (best cheap lure I have ever bought by the way, Hit after hit until I lost it in the snag, will be stocking up)
Just do a search mate, There are so many guys posting about Jacks at this time of year you are bound to pick up a few pointers.
I just try and read the situation at the time and do whatever feels good to you, I find fishing is so much more satisfying when you just go with your gut instinct and give anything and everything a try.

Hey Stoka if I get to my local K-Mart tomorrow and they're all gone I won't be happy > On a more serious note go for it mate just make sure you change the trebles, after a couple of hits and checking the lure the trebles were stuffed. There are a few colours but the winner had a red back over an off coloured white.

Mate I think a good snag incomming tide if possible dose not matter due to jacks being very territorial they seem to hold to a snag what so ever, a 2/0 hook 40lb leader on 15 to 30lb braid your choice, and a live bait, herring, poddy mullet etc and lob it into the snags edge and wait i like night fishing it seems better, or work a snag with any lure they are agressive and very territorial they will hit it if annoyed enough.

Hi Cam,

I'm based in Cairns so things may be a bit different where you are; but typically, look for areas where there is structure and cast just before it. For example, around mangroves, old wrecks, submerged trees - that should give you enough to get started.

That being said most predatory fish like Jacks, GT's etc will respond to that - I typically use live bait wherever possible, not a lure fisherman, never had one work for me yet. Guess I'm 'artificially challenged'

You most likely will lose a bit of gear as Jacks typically like snag infested areas and hit like a train but they are one of the best eating fish you will ever catch. With that in mind, only take enough to provide a feed - Jacks are slow growers and susceptible to overfishing.
