HEY GUYS I NEED HELP , AM DYING TO CATCH SOME MUD CRABS , I HAVE THE TRAPS , THE BAIT AND EVERYTHING , COULD I ASK WHAT ARE THEIR FAVOURED CONDITIONS ? AND CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME TIPS ? MUCH APPRECIATED
OK, first thing is to turn off "caps lock" 'cause it seems like you are cranky or something, Muddies are possible from the South Coast of NSW to the tip of the Cape, the less fishing pressure the more you will get, any creek/River with Mangroves and a good water flow (tide) will yeild a feed of crabs, if the area is fairly remote, you can leave the traps and come back later, but if it is popular, you will come back later and have no traps.
hi archilles where about in australia you live i am in nth qld if your in my area i can give the name of a couple of spots , but how ever in your area try bigger tides and on full moons i find i get more male crabs and they and fuller too lower tides and no moon i seam to mainly get females , any how let me know and happy hunting .
thanks very much wombat ! mate i live in sydney and there's afew muddy creeks/rivers out here just trying to pick out the clean ones ! can you only use mullet ? because i caught all this sweep on the weekend and i don't like to eat it so i'll just use it for bait !
Sweep will be OK for bait, not too sure how many Mudcrabs there are left in Sydney these days, but can't hurt to try, we get a few down in the Illawarra during Summer.
when living in sydneyn got heaps of muddies hawkbury at spencer george river lane cove i found that the run out was better &full moon some muddies from L/covewhent 4 to 5 lb and got pick to prove it
Hi archilles
depends on where in sydney you are based if down on the Manly area head towards Bayveiw Church point it use to be a top spot for muddies when i lived down there
a mate of mine lost his big toe to one walking through the mangroves
that was over 30yrs ago but i still no people down that way and they still get muddies along the area you will just have to look place your pots at low tide and retrieve them on the next low it also use to be a great place for Blue swimmers (sand crabs) the same as clare view was some great mangroves
up the hawksbury river along to patonga and up to gosford from etta long a lot of great mangroves and plenty of good muddies
and around botany bay, rose bay just look for the mangroves you will find the spots as well as asking your local tackle shops in the areas you are fishing will also help you out
muddies in the georges river is (was) not uncommon,,, i've been on bribie isl for the past 15 yrs,,,but prior we lived in minto heights,,(when it was acreage homes,,,not like today),,,
we use to haunt the area opposite picnic point,,,forget the name of the road that lead outta hammondville near liverpool,, and entered via a 4b track,,,
the boys and i would camp overnite and catch a feed of fish/crab,,,and sometimes a feed of nothing,,,but was a good area,,,its probably changed into a suburb now,,,but if not,,maybe worth a look
hi archilles yer use what ever bait you like i know people up here in nth qld that use kangaroo tail and tins of pal dog meat even myshelf i use pigs heads i get form the bucther for nothing , so yer give any thing a go .
I'm 2.5 hours drive south of Sydney and get muddies in the creek that runs into lake. Most people don't believe it. I have heard of them down as far as Bega.
