as far as areas go, not too sure about Ballina, but anywhere that there is a sand flat covered at high tide or a shallow creek will get all the poddies you want, if you are after small ones, a plastic trap will get them, the ones about 5 inches in diamter and the ends come off, or a home made one from a clear plastic cordial bottle, the larger flatish ones are best, with a small X cut in the side, then pushed open to make a sort of entrance with pointed sides, put a couple of rocks in to keep it on the bottom, a couple of bits of bread and hey presto, mullet trap for free.

you can catch bigger estuary mullet using a pencil float similar to the way you fish for gar. Burley with very finely ripped up bread and grass clippings and goldfish food. On a very small hook (no 10) put a piece of dough made from the same. They absolutley go off when hook so keep a hand on the rod.

The only way to catch sea mullet legally in nsw is to have some one throw one at you from what i understand.

not too sure what you mean about the Sea Mullet statement, they are legal to catch, but can be very tricky, I have got a few on live maggots and while using bread fishing for other Mullet, I can tell you, they go when hooked, especially on fly, I have caught them on my 'special" fly, which is a tiny hook and a bean bag polystyrene "bean: threaded on, if they could be reliably caught, Trout fishing would die overnight (maybe)

we just use dry dough on small and light hooks we then have a bucket ready we usually catch little poddy mullet for bait and use a plastic bottle with bait inside with all the sides stabbed so the fish can get in but not out. a normal day would catch up to 42 fish.

we usually go to the "lagoon" in wollongong.

any sand flat with a weedy edge will do. North creek near the boat ramp @ Cawarra park was where i did this as a kid. we would put a 4 litre Ice cream container with a hole cut in the lid about 50-60 cm round and rock in the bottom with a couple of slices of bread. put it in the water near the weed, and ideally with less than a foot of water over the top. keep another few slices of bread out and tear them up to berley them up to your trap, but don't feed em, just get them interested.

    I hope this still works

    cheers, roo.

We used nana's bread dough with cotton wool mixed up in it on a little fly hook and away we'd go for the poddies.

I think Cris was referring to the fact that you used to able to jag mullet in NSW but now you can't or else . [smiley=guardian.gif]
Beautiful to eat the old sea mullet eh

Park up at Coastal Patrol and walk back along the wall to the lake, berley up with a couple of handfuls of breadcrumbs and sit back and wait for the mullet to show up!

Size 14 fly hook with a couple of maggots, or small bit of balled white bread will sort enough out for a session.

I went down to yamba this year for a week holiday staying in the caravan park. We were jewie fishing every night and the locals advised big live mullet = big jew. I tried bloody everything to catch one of these mullet that school up in the bays in the arvo, light floats with bread, bait traps etc etc, until one night a local came down with his jewie gear parked his trolley walked over casted into the bay area and started winding in really fast and striking it all the way back. I went over and asked him what he was doing he said he was fishing for mullet with his mulet lure (two hooks tied back to back with mono conected to mainline).

i mean once they get out in the big blue your best bet is a net or a jag hook both of which i understand the be illegal. At sea they are much fussier feeders - i've never caught one on line in surf or semi-surf despite some effort, probably because on the spawning run they are thinking about lovvvvvvvvvve.

    here's an interesting page

    http://www.affa.gov.au/content/outpu...854358A218BB59

94 tonnes TONNES TONNES of mullet caught by by recreational fisherman in QUEENSLAND ALONE - what a load of tripe. The statistics used show this as a quarter of the recreational bream haul.

Get a thick rubber band. Tie 4 or 5 very short lengths of light mono onto the rubber band at different points around the band. Attach tiny hooks. Bind tiny hooks with white cotton. Connect the band to the end of your fishing line. Wrap the band around a slice of bread and cast. The fish start to hit the bread and will also hit the cotton covered hooks. By coincidence I was shown this rig by an old bloke in Ballina!!! He was a gun jew man who used to anchor in the middle of the walls and get great jew. I got my mullet in North Ck.
