    Banded Scatfish or striped butterfish

When I was chasing bait with my cast net yesterday I caught a banded scatfish or striped butterfish in the net and when I tried to get it out the little bugger spiked my finger - not realising they had venom glands at the base of each spine I thought nothing of it until it started to get quite painful a few moments later. The pain isn't up to the standard of a happy moment and went away quite quickly but definitely a fish to treat with care.

    Pic attached.

    Snake catcher,

Yep they can give you quite a good sting Have been done by some little ones b4.. there is also the spotted version. No were near as common and worth a mint if you can convert it to fresh and sell at the local aquarium shop

yeah they have done me many times in the pine - some more painful than others, but yeah, not the worse you can come across. very pretty fish though.

Agree - very common in the Pine at times. They grow to a reasonable size and are very strong fighting fish when hooked on luderick gear. The small ones will eat bits of prawn but the bigger ones appear to be vegetarian and I've only ever caught them on weed. They are not worth eating (having tried them once) so I now release them all. Now and then when I've hit a school with the cast net I've got the odd black one amongst the general run of silvers. I've kept them in an aquarium and gradually reduced the salt content but only managed to keep them alive for a few months

LMAO @ snakecatcher... my partner did EXACTLY the same thing ;-) #He learnt the hard way all about the spotbanded scat. #He tried to use it as livebait... nothing touched it ;-) #He had been pulling them out of his net and throwing them back without problem, even throwing one on his line and nothing. #Then he dropped one as he was throwing it back in, went to flick it out and it got him. #His hand swelled up and he had shooting pain up his arm. #Still... he continued to fish ;-)

I got spiked in the finger from an adult one of these last night...suffering the joys of it right now, just looking at what filthy fish it was.... My hand is all swolen up and still partially numb 12hours later but atleast the burning pain has dissapated overnight...

After watching the people fish At the POB boat ramp opposite the water police.... where they put in that new little pontoon walkway.. Threw the cast net in and got about 12 of them near 30cm in the one cast...

Hot water breaks the venom down if you get hit by them. In winter I always carry a large thermos of hot coffee and have resorted to using that on one or two hits before.
