I normally fish freshwater, but work over the Christmas period means no time to head west. Can anyone tell me if there is a reasonable chance of catching a Mangrove Jack in the Richmond around Ballina? I used to come across a few years ago in the Bruns, but prefer to fish Ballina now.
Please note, I am not after the exact secret spot - unless it is common knowledge , just want to know if is worth putting the time in. Any pointers appreciated - thanks.
g,day mate,
the only jack i have ever caught was at ballina, under the bypass bridge north of KFC.its the 2nd bridge back from the mouth fish on the KFC side.caught mine on dried up old beach worm from the tweed bait box,go figure fishing can be like that.also try sandflats on northern side 100m up the road for flathead.
i live at brunswick hds,ya dont have any offshore gps marks you could trade for above info do ya?
Shouldnt have any problems catching jacks in Ballina I have seen plenty in Bruunswick Heads and knoiw guys who consistentky spear them around Byron annd Northern NSW. The EAC brings a mixture of both temperate and coo water fish in your area. You should check out the spearing vid Immersion 1 and 2 you would be suprised the fish that live in your area.
Try pilons bridges and troll rock walls or use fresh herring
Gumbies, I only have a small boat now days and do not go offshore, however (for Devocean) I have done a lot of diving around the area for many years- Windarra Banks, Cape Pin and even the Pine Tree on the 4 mile and have seen some amazing stuff like huge schools of really big Jack aggregated off Windarra Banks. I just cannot be bothered with the kerfuffle to launch a boat in Byron Bay anymore, so made the switch to smaller boats some time ago.
any sort of permanent structure will hold jacks. The rock walls in the bar and the the porpoise wall are known spots. any of the jetties and their pylons, the canal estates have various floating pontoons too. Then you can head up the creeks for a submerged tree or other structure. Jacks can be found well up stream in he richmond river.
Good luck.
Cheers, roo.
