    27 Meg reception

I have seen many threads talking about the range and reception on VHF vs 27 meg. I only have 27 meg and have found it to be more then adequate for my needs. I don't know if I just have a very good set up or what, but have good reception and transmit on the 35's east of Moreton of both Brisbane Coast Guard and VMR Raby Bay at all times. I was wondering what sort of range others get with their 27 meg.

As an aside I regularly clearly pick up VMR Bribie when out there and also Point Danger and weaker signals from VMR Brunswick and the boats they are talking to. Yesterday was exceptional, I was at the top of the Rous and clearly picked up signals from Narooma, Shoalhaven and Ulladulla. I heard another guy do a radio check with CG Brisbane and they advised that his signal was OK but weak and scratchy and spoke to another couple of blokes at the ramp who told me that their reception north of Harries was poor. I did a radio check with Raby Bay and was advised that the signal was booming. I have an old radio and a basic 'tinnie aerial' so am surprised by the strength of both reception and transmit.

When we where up in 1770 a year ago, we could hear people talking from Iluka on the old GME 27Meg .... I believe that's what's called 'skip'

I haven't tried contacting them but am getting through to the local stations from the other side of Moreton clear as a bell. WIth clear reception I can't see a reason at the moment to upgrade to VHF. I think I will save it until DSC becomes more in vogue.

I will be getting rid of my 27meg, it's range is not good, and yes I did hear Port Adelaide from up at Bustard one morning, but what is the point, if it won't transmit back to the VMR at 1770 (about 21km).

    Re: 27 Meg reception

Had both radio's going last Sunday. Generally the 27meg has good reception, but all the rubbish talk drove us nuts. By comparison the VHF has much better reception and very little chatter.

Your right Roz, no good hearing across the other side of Aus if you can't contact your local VMR.

    Cheers,

Your right skippa it is called "skip", i used to have the old 27 meg cb hooked up at home and and when the skip came through talk to people all over the world.

It's a case of personal preference i spose but i would sooner say it once on vhf rather than repeat myself over on the 27 meg if i was out too sea and sinking fast. This is where vhf comes into it's own. If hooked up too your gps i believe, when you hit channell 16 it relays your exact gps coordinates as well?

But bowser i have one of those GME's that must have been built on a tuesday as it is a ripper when it comes to signal strength so it's a matter of what you are comfortable with if the shit hits the fan and you really need to use it.
