    X51 settings

Had a 3-year old head replaced and the new one seems to generate a lot more clutter than the old one (using the same transducer). Can't seem to get the settings right for 20-40m in the salt. What settings do others use with this sounder? Sensitivity (auto ot not?), noise reject, grayline, scroll speed etc. The new head runs a later version of software - either this is worse than the old version or I've got a dud unit.

    Thanks

G'day Strewth, your not geting much of a response and it's been quite a while since I've had a Lowrance but I'll offer a bit of input, may be useless to you but wont cost any thing to try(you can always go back to factory settings).Firstly, knock it out of auto, manual is the only way to drive a sounder if looking for fish, secondly no fish symbols this is a gimick, these two things are a must, the rest is trial and error.Sensitivity,a good starting point is to go to where you know for sure there is reef, use the range facility to get the bottom as close to the middle of the screen as you can, then set the sensitivity so that a second return starts to appear somewhere between the reef and the bottom of the screenthen go back into the range seting and put the bottom in the bottom third of the screen, there should be a healthy dose of clutter going down the water collumn but not to the bottom,if there is not,you can screw up the sensitivity a bit more, you are not chasing a clean picture as long as the bottom 20 to 30 feet is clear you are right.Grayline is used to paint grey in the middle of targets, set this over your reef after the sensitivity and you should be able to distinguish the differance between sand and rock by the thickness of the gray line.Only use the Noise reduction if you are sure that electrical noise is a problem and you can't solve it any other way(rerouting cables etc.).I only used to use the Surface Clarity Controll (SCC) if looking for bait balls in the top of the water collumn, you could probably turn the sensitivity down to get the same result.I use the fastest scroll speed available.Hope this helps more than it hinders.

Thanks Banshee. I never run with Fish ID on, but found that the Fish Reveal feature clears up the picture a bit. Used to run the old one using a sensitivity of around 92%, noise reject = low, grayline around 90%,and get excellent arches. My unit doesn't have SCC. Will try setting up over a reef as you suggest.

Was also hoping for a few comments from X51 owners, as they are a very common sounder.
