    Lowrance X52 Questions ?

    Hey All,

Reasonably new to boating and purchased a Quintrex 480 Freedom Sport with Yamaha 70hp 2 stroke with a lowrance X52.

After using it now for the past few months, I'm starting to get a list of questions you can help me.
    1- I belive I need a seperate speed tranducer to obtain a speed on the X52 ?
2- How does the standard yamaha speed gauge get it's speed from. Is it sharing the bus from the X52 transducer or what happens ??
3- Just starting this weekend the depth measurment starts to flash and the depth reading freezes. Any idea what is causing it ?

    Thanks

    Steve

    steve,

    i have a lowrance x91.

    1. Don't get a seperate speed transducer - get a GPS. That will do the speed over the ground thing.

    2. You speed gauge on the dash is linked to the thin black pointy thingo on your transom probably near the sounder probe - its speed can be influenced by current etc as it measures water speed not across the ground speed - this can be useful though.

    3. Depth measurement flashes when you lose "ground lock". I'd guess you be at speed when this happens. If it happens a lot, crank up the sensitivity to 90% - does it still happen ? If it does tilt the sounder probe forward ( so its tail end is slightly lower than the front end. This makes it shoot slightly forward.

The best readings on your sounder will occur when you turn the filters & fish shape crap off & turn the sensitivity up until the screen is starting to snow. This means you interpret the image & not be given a generaslised image from a machine.

Buy a book called "The Lowrance Book of Sounders" by Ron Calcutt on the Gold Coast from Kmart or your local tackle shop for about $20. Its a great guide & uses photos of real sounder screens to explain things.

    Hope this helps,

    chris

    Chris,

Thanks for the heads up. I was also reading teh 13 page Sounder post in this forum. Its a great idea and a real help. Still amazes me how you guys know what fish is what from the sounder ?

I only have the one transducer on the transom ! When this has been knocked in teh past it stopped the speedo working on the Yamaha Gauge. If this only does the speedo where is my sounder transducer or can it be linked to both the speedo and sounder ? Reading the manual last night I thought you cant have a through hull sounder unless you drill a hole etc.

Little confused. I also read on the forum (Do not leave the sounder on out of the water) never knew this and it has been on alot out of the water (Doh).

Must admit reading the manual there is so much to learn Arghhhh. Me brain is hurting.

if you have been turning the battery isolation switch "off" you have been turning off the sounder. If you haven't you should be, its very unsafe to tow/store without isolating the battery.

this is what you have me thinks - http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard...nk/page05.aspx

sounds alright - big trouble with integration is dependency - hub goes down it all goes down.

    Steve,

Not sure on the 70 hp's but my 115 hp Yammie gets its speed from a pressure probe inside the outboard leg just above the gearbox. Sometimes the speed freezes or drops out, usually caused by getting blocked up.

Then again if its got one of those black pointy thingies ( technical stuff this isn't it ) Chris has mentioned, conected by a small clear tube up to the back of the Yammie gauges, then there's no point looking on the leg of ya Yammie.

    Chris,

I've got a X91 manual from my old boat I forgot I had ... your welcome to it if you need it .. up to you mate.

    Cheers,

    Tony,

I've been using some logic and from you said it would make sense. I'm sure the black pointy thing is my transducer. It just left what was my speedo coming from. I also thought it came from the transducer but after reading my X52 manual back to back last night it cant. It has the option for a optional speed sensor with a wheel thingo (Which I dont have). My mate with his new Cruisecraft resort 6 and 200 Yama has the same setup and we are both asking where is our speed reading coming from ?

I noticed yeterday my speed didnt start reading untill I tilted the engine to 2 it worked fine. Again like you said it may have been partially blocked. I would have never thought that was how it worked as the yama manual says nothing.

Many thanks for the offer of your x91 manual, but I do have my X52 one. It;s liking learning a whole new lanugage. Turned on the fish ID stuff just to get used to using it and once familiar will turn off the fish ID. Will also crank up the sensitivity to 90% or so. Just want to launch teh boat and start playing with it. It's been a glorified depth gauge to date.

i've just installed this link on my previous post - i forgot oops

    http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard...nk/page05.aspx

if you dig around the info there you'll see it works via a hub & triducer (yes triducer)

    Tony,
thanks for the offer on the manual but I've got one

    Yep,

Confirmed with the dealer that the speedo gauge comes from a pressure gauge in the gearbox leg.
