I recieved some info from Garmin today,
They stated that I needed to buy the MapSource BlueChart Pacific,
The sad thing is that this Map costs about the same as the GPS unit its self.
    Back to the Drawing Board.....
Might just have to buy a tide book.

Re: Garmin GPS72 - Tide Times

    Don't buy the blue chart!
it does not work on the GPS 72 as it is not a map GPS like the GPS76

Garmin "Mapsource" software works, but it is insanely expensive and has inaccurate mapping and names etc (made for USA).
Do a search for "Easy GPS" software - it's FREE and does the same as mapsource.
you will need to buy (hint: eBay) a serial port to GPS connection cable for it if you want to manage GPS waypoints on your PC.

I use Google Earth and paid the US$20 to enable the GPS connectivity with it. Some of the (sattilite) pics are clear enough to see reefs offshore in the shallow (6-8m) areas - mark them on Google Earth, swap them (manually if you have to) to Easy GPS and upload!

The GPS 72 tide function does not work because there are no tide bouys here in Aus - only USA

    Cheers, NS

With GPS enabled in google earth does it allow you to upload points to the GPS? Or just download them from the GPS?

Re: Garmin GPS72 - Tide Times

I had a quick look for the 'upload' button, but it sort of 'didn't fall into my outstretched hand' so used Easy GPS

It's weird that it wouldn't have an upload, but it has a download?

wherever the cursor is, it displays the GPS co-ods anyway if you wanted to manually enter them. - just make sure you have the same datum in both!

n-dorphin, received basically the same info from garmin as you re bluechart. ended up ringing local Garmin dealer/repairer & they were more than helpful.bluechart won't help as Aust. tide charts are not supported at this time.

One would think that the sellers will inform you about the inconsistencies of some products... and one should make more enquiries before buying... especialy if one is buying sophisticated electronic items....Has the fisherman become so lazy that a simple tide chart is no longer good enough?

Perhaps we all should go back to the old days when we used to make our own lures . and we used to catch fish.. easy with some secret places guarded religiously... Happy fishing

not a matter of being lazy, it's there as part of a solunar tables thing on the set. Also not important, but it's there so why not try & use it if possible..Also nothing inconsistent about they are set up for the US, we know that, but with improvements in technology they may have come up with some Aussie tide charts & still may..hence the enquiry.

    Not sure about that.
    I have a Garmin GPSMap 178C with a bluechart.
It lists tide stations all up & down the coast.

    Yeah?

Owen, can the 178 retreive info from the tide bouys?

in the GPS72 manual it talks about tide bouys and when you try to locate them using the GPS72 it says something like "no bouys available"

I know there are definately tide bouys in Australia, but maybe the GPSs cannot log onto them to retrieve info?

Re: Garmin GPS72 - Tide Times

so are you saying the GPS tries to log onto and retrieve info from tide buoys? how do they do this?
