My brother is getting a Poly boat 4.55 frontrunner. He wants it for the reef and around the islands. He wants to get a hand held GPS and a K-Mart $150 sounder. He is a tight arse when it comes to money !!! I told him to buy a decent sounder for around $300 and a fixed, mounted GPS like a Garmen GPS 152 for around the $550 mark.
He said what's the difference between a cheap and dear sounder and I don't know so maybe you lot could help.
What do you recommend ?
He has plenty of money but says he hasn't ..... single, small morgage and no wife or kids with a above average wage !
You can get by with a hand held GPS but it needs to be a good brand like Garmin or Magellan. Plan on around $250 -300.
Sounder is a different thing altogether. El Cheapo models are OK if you are looking at the bottom contours and structure only. They are NOT good fish finders as they will tell you that there are fish everywhere regardless of what you have the gain/sensitivity set at.
Tell him to look for a secondhand GPS/Sounder that someone is selling to upgrade - try the FOR SALE chat board here or even e-bay.
Ya get what you pay for.
