    Garmin 120 problems

I have one of the original Garmin GPS units, in the 120 !

Yesterday, I started the unit and it would not log onto satelites. The unit itself was working, but no sign of acquiring a satelite.

I checked the terminal at the unit, and found minimal rust. Cleaned it and sprayed, but to no avail. I cannot see any kinks or breaks in the remote antenna cable, and the connection from the cable to the antenna looks in good nick. I left the unit on overnight, but still no go.

I believe the problem lies with the cable or antenna.

    So my questions are:-

Has anyone else had this very problem ?

Does anyone know or have a GOOD idea of the problem ?

Has anyone had a similar problem, but with another brand of GPS ?

Does anyone know of a reputable repairer, I was thinking of GME in Brisbane ?

And lastly, does anyone know next weeks winning lotto numbers ?

Phill, test the unit with any other antenna cable such as 128 or 152 models. generally the antenna is at fault. the plug can be easily changed and tandys sell em.

Make sure you set the connections properly.

OK, still haven't done what I should have. But now have contact with a guy that has a similar unit, and I will be going to see him and plug in his antenna.

If my unit works, mmmmmm I think I know the problem.

I will, however, take apart the unit and look in the back for corrosion etc.

The antenna cable fitting is ' loose ". and that may be a problem as well.

Still on the go, and will keep ya'll informed.

Maybe you can kick start it by manually inserting the position instead of letting it auto locate the satellites and lat/long.
If you go to MENU x SETUP (or system) and insert the following as a position it might get it's brain going again........

    S 27.252.000 E 153.06.000

That'd be OK, except for the S 27.252.000 me thinks it has one too many digits in da middle

But, not a bad suggestion, and I will give it a shot.

Ya havta go into SETUP and select the format of the Lat/Long Phil to get all the digits!
Not the end of the world (excuse the PUN ) to only have two but more is better!
