I think they are in a reasonably big way in NZ and a few dealers in Oz.

I used to own a shop retailing this sort of stuff at Manly and have never heard of them but that doesn't mean to say they aren't any good.

I guess spares and service are always considerations with the lesser known brands.

For me, Furuno is pretty hard to beat followed by JVC, Kodan etc.

Probably get into trouble for saying it, but never was a fan of the Eagle, Hummingbird, Navman stuff as we spent half our time returning it for repairs - very popular all the same and reasonably priced.

JMC is reasonably well know in the commercial fishing sector as the poor cousin of other Japanese manufacturers such as JRC, Furuno and Koden.
In the past they have had models which were actually manufactured in China which tarnished their reliability reputation. Unfortunately some other well known Japanese manufacturers are now also having their units built in China and Taiwan. Check the box for "Made in Japan" for real Japanese quality.

Re: Who's heard of JMC electronics??

Thanks Choppa and not sure about the GEC thingo.
I'm ususally in the same mind set as TPP and go Furuno but the price difference is considerable (roughly $600 v's $400)
When I look at the unit (GP100) and look at the Furuno 32 the only major difference is the 4 way button postion. And the JMC thingo is an 18 sat. tracker and is only DGPS ready whilst the 32 has WAAS
I would be suprised if they were made in the same factory.

The only reason I'm looking at them is I only want a basic GPS without the need for cards or active aerials or blah, blah, blah. In short a Garmin 45xl hand held with a larger screen.

Anybody know of anything else on the market other then the Furuno 32 and the Garmin 126/128 (what are they like??)

I've got a Apelco 7000 plotter which I never used the nav. bit or never needed to (and it's active aerial is cactus. A new one is $$$$ so stuff it I'll get a new basic GPS).

    Scott,

I have a lot of confidence in Trymax Marine at Capalaba.

    http://www.trymax.com.au/

They are excellent to deal with, always happy to assist and help out and don't push expensive products at you.

Don't forget that DGPS is a bit of a furphy really.......................

You only need three satellites to get good accuracy and at the moment there are about 26 of them up there. On most days you will always pick up at least six to eight.............

Personally, I hate handhelds as their antenna (being the most important componant) is not up to the same standards as the external ones, they are very difficult to read and handle and even the biggest screen size is not all that crash hot when you are in the rough stuff, rain and lost!

If their antenna is blocked from direct lines to the Sats they will quickly lose their accuracy.

None of them are guaranteed waterproof so spray, rain or dropping them overboard is not going to help them much.

In my old shop selling this stuff, the majority of buyers who went for the handhelds were usually (not always) disappointed.

Tell yer Missus you need if for SAFETY SAKE - that is always a winner!

The cook's no problem...she gets lost just like me
Thanks TPP, I'll give the guys a cooee.
I just had a look at the trimax page and they sell the JMC stuff
The money isn't really a consideration. I just want a basic GPS that last more then the warantee period. And as the saying goes..you get what you pay for. I just don't want all the bells and whistles.
    Cheers Scott

Re: Who's heard of JMC electronics??

I had a look at JMC when buying the present sounder . As previously stated it is the poor cousin to Furuno/JRC IMHO.

I can also vouch for Trymax Marine where I bought my JRC FF50.

When you consider all the money you put into a boat fishing rig, the last thing you want to be miserly on is the sounder ...again IMHO
