    This is the one piece of equipment that, like John West said, "only the best will do".
    This is what i'm getting at. You saying this means that if you dont have the best available you may aswell have nothing!
    So you would rather a boatie have no marine radio at all than have a handheld?

    thanks for the feed bck guys ,all points of view talken on board ,i was just looking for abit of backup when i go out of mobile range,but i always hose the boat out when iget home(inc the sounder and gps ,bloody wet boat at times) and when i do need it, the batteries will be flat ,just looking at another form of assistance,because i usually fish alone

    If you are looking for a handheld I would look at ICOM or Standard Horizon. Keep in mind the range on a handheld is probably not much more than 5 miles depending on conditions it can be less. I'd look at http://www.############### you can generally import them yourself cheaper.

    thanks- as long as i can contact another boat ,if base is unreachable is fine
