Depends what you mean by "budget" but if you are talking less than$1000 then probably not worth it. Colour sure is "pretty" and brilliant for viewing in bright sunlight or from the other end of the boat, but resolution & power are what catches fish. You can get a Lowrance X67c for $5-600 looks nice in the shop running on simulator but real world it won't find fish that well 3.5" screen 320x240. But $4-500 will by a Lowrance x125 (5" 480x480) or Matrix27 (5"640x320) both with about 3x the transducer power that up till 12-18 months ago were pretty well "state of the art" and well documented fish "finders"! IMO if you don't want to spend big $'s stick with monochrome.
