Go for a sony - they have a new 6 megapixel one called I think DSC_W30 which has some good reviews, retails for around $400.

I have an older model of these and it is a great camera

I asked the same question a little while back.

Check out pge 2 this section 11th June. The guys gave some great advice and there were a few Fuji people; who if i remember correctly, didn't appear til after I'd bought mine.

I ended up with a FujiS5600 10 optical zoom 5.6 other . It has macro and heaps of other features. Auto shots seem to work really well in a hurray.

Was going to get a water proof camera intitially and the pentax with 3 optical zoom was where I got to but then decided that I'd had an SLR in the boat for years and didn't really need to go waterproof. Also wanted more optical zoom. The Fuji also has AA rechargables.

See todays post Offshore GC there are a couple of shots I got yesterday with the Fuji.
If you go waterproof I was told by the camera salesperson, to watch out for auto lense closing flaps. Apparently any sand or dirt and you can end up with a great gash across the lense. May not be an issue on a boat but on the beach ?????

    Hope this is of help

    Cheers

I have had pentax's and like them, a friend has a ricoh they're excellent, used to have an olympus until my sister lost it, they're brilliant. Pentax and Olympus take very good photos in my experience, if I was buying again I would look at a casio ex-z600, I saw one and had a play around and they are great too. Minolta's are good also, panasonic's, haven't experienced sony, have heard good and bad reviews about them. There are so many out there, some good, some not so good. You're just after a point and shoot camera yes? Do you want it to take aa batteries or its own lithium ion rechargeable batteries? Do you want more than 6 megapixels? What memory cards would you prefer it to take? Cheers, Joey.

my friend just bought a ricoh 6mp camera from The Good Guys, it was $270 and it came with an SD card 128mb. I have too many 1gb SD cards so let me know if you want one they are very cheap, $60. If you want to spend more then you can on the camera, for $550 there is a nice casio the one I mentioned. There are so many to choose from. Cheers, Joey.

A few features to look out for:

    1. Lens - this is critical and usually overlooked. A lot of camera manufacturers make their own lenses and some outsource them. Nikon, Cannon and Olympus all make good lenses, but I think that the Carl Zeiss lenses on many Sony cameras are hard to beat.

    2. Transfer speed - some digital cameras are very slow in the transfer from lens to digital image and you have to hold the camera in place for a long time before moving it.

I have used a few different types and like the Sony cameras better than any others that I have tried.

I have a Pentax Optio W10 camera. It is waterproof, 6mp, 3 x optical zoom, 2.5 " lcd viewer, an excellent camera. Around $500 with a decent memory card. Reconmend it to anyone, especially for someone who's got an open tinney like mine. Waterproof is the clincher.

    These guys are good reviewers:
    http://www.cnet.com.au/digitalcamera...-1r-10s,00.htm

And this is a highly respected US site:
    http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html

I've got a Pentax SLR DL ist which is great but probably not what you're after. My boat camera is a Pentax 330 P&S which, like all Pentax's has a brilliant chip which picks up excellent colour and the lens is clear and bright. But whatever you get, the important thing these days is good software so beg borrow or steal a copy of Photoshop CS or the slightly lighter PS Elements v4.

Do your homework so you know more than the salesman (which won't be hard in my experience). And don't be afraid to buy from the US on sites like this one as you'll get a great price and shipping takes only a week:

Go a Sony, have had 3 of them with no problems, I just kept upgrading to my current one a Sony Cyber-shot 7.2 mega pixel.

Just tried an Olympus and it took terrible photos compared to a sony. In a humid environment it fogged up a lot more and I haven't seen a clear photo from it yet.
