Hi guys
We have just purchased a new chartplotter and sounder and are not confident about attempting to install it ourselves.

Hi Janine you might want to narrow down the area you are in as to who is in that part of town. I use TRYMAX marine they did a really good job and they go thru whats involved with you if you ask. They are at Capalaba.
Ken
Yeah - that would help!
I am at Birkdale (near Capalaba, Wellington Point area)

G'day Janine

If you have any doubts, get people that know to do the job.
BUT, IMO, this job is fairly easy. The hardest part of the installation is setting up the transducer. This can be overcome by reading the instructions carefully and plan the fittment.
Some hints are, run the transducer cable away ( other side of boat ) from other electricial cables and wiring.
Solder and heat shrink ALL joins.
Measure twice, cut once, in respect to mounting positions for units.
Be mindful of who needs to see the units, weather proof area and ease of removal.
Disregard the fuse holders that come with the units and purchase dedicated " waterproof "holders.
If you are mounting a transom mount transducer, be mindful of the position in respect of people climbing aboard the boat from the stern. A cover plate is a good investment. If the boat is glass, a through hull transducer is ideal and a prefered method.
Cable tie all loose wires.
Try to utilize a ' bus ' bar for all wiring and always include a " spike / surge " protector, fitted at the battery or before the bus bar.
Keep your plotter/ sounder user manual in the boat in a waterproof ziplock bag.
There is great satisfaction in doing this job yourself, so I would encourage you to have a go. But, if you feel your are getting into trouble, go the professional.
Cheers Phill

Janine,
Some good tips from Phill if you want to have a go yourself, as Phill says it's not rocket science.
However the guys at Trymax are great and only a few mintues drive from Birkdale.
Good luck,
Tony
PS I might of missed a post but which plotter and sounder did u finish up with??
Light travels faster than sound, that's why some people seem Bright ...... untill they speak
Thanks for your replies guys!
Lucky Phil - you sound like you really know what you are talking about! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Fishing-Freddy and Blackened - I was in at Trymax yesterday getting some prices on a couple of units and they seemed really helpful! I didn't end up purchasing from them though so would feel a bit uneasy going there to have them fitted or do you think that this is something that they would be doing all the time?
Skippa - ended up getting a Navman Fish4500 and Navman Tracker5505.
Pete is keen to try to install it himself but I am wary of the dollars involved, so I will get him to read all of the manuals and if he is at all unsure I will be ringing a professional!
Thanks again
Janine
Hi Janine I didnt get my sounder off trymax as I could get it cheaper at the boat show, but they still fitted it no worries. As said have a go your self but if unsure or dont have time get the pros to fit.
Ken
