Yeah Humminbird have a sounder that has a transducer that you cast with your rod. I dont know if they are any good though, Ive never used one or even seen them used.
I looked into this for a while and on some american sites I remember seeing a few guys saying that the wide mouthed bass (excuse me if this is not really what they are called) would sometimes take a liking to the chartreuse transducer that you cast out. A few guys had even watched in horror as a fish had gladly inhaled the important bit of their fishfinder and busted it off.
As a serious fishfinder I personally doubt there performance simply because of the lack of pixels on the display. They would probably do to tell you the depth though, its a lot of money for a depth finder though.
