SHALLOW WATER SOUNDER
G'day fellow fisherpeople. I am the proud owner of a 1985 model EAGLE FISH ID sounder and I have been waiting for it to die before I update to something made this century. It has been a reliable and accurate unit and if the fish are not biting u can count the pixels for something to do. Seeing as how it refuses to malfunction I am going to update anyway, Can anyone recommend a good sounder for most freshwater impoundments and rivers plus coastal rivers. Slightly biased towards EAGLE/LOWRANCE but open to suggestions. looking for a unit that will operate accurately at faster speeds with a price range around $500. to bolt onto a Stacer Proline 3.95 V-bow punt with 30hp.Appreciate any suggestions.

Re: SHALLOW WATER SOUNDER
G'day Rabbi,
Mate, I've recently installed a Humminbird Matrix 27 on my tinny. It's around your budget, cost me $520 from BIAS. So far I've not had much chance to get familiar with it, but from the use I've had, it seems ok. It does have a very high vertical pixel count at 640, and shows plenty of detail. It's definitely harder to read than a colour screen, but to get that sort of resolution in colour would cost a lot more. I've also recently moved to the Burdekin from Townsville, so I haven't been able to compare it with my old sounder in familiar territory. If you are only looking for a sounder, without the GPS availability, you can get a Humminbird FF565 for a bit less money. Send a PM to Jason Bird at Sundown Marine through ausfish and you'll be well received.
Cheers mate

Re: SHALLOW WATER SOUNDER
Dont get a matrix of any sort.
A matrix comes back through the shop with problems with a ratio of about 7:1 compared to lowrance.

Re: SHALLOW WATER SOUNDER
G,day rabbi if you want a sounder for shallow water get a sounder with a wider beam or beams, alot of sounders only have 20 deg beam which only covers a small area. I wouldn't go less than 320 pixels myself.
cheers
