Yes they are an upgrade. The main benefit is that they are USB PC connected. The other is that they have the keyboard at the bottom which in a boat is a bit easier to use.

    Re: handheld garmin gps 60

I bought a GPS60 about 2 months ago - my first GPS. I choose it mainly because of the USB connection and the supposed ease of use. I can't comment much on whether it's easy to use, because I have nothing to compare it to. I can only say that I didn't have too much trouble in using it, which is probably a recommendation given my inexperience.

I must say that I like the USB connection. Transferring waypoints, tracks and routes from the PC to the GPS and back again is as easy as clicking on a button.

The other feature I love is that you can display your waypoints, tracks and routes on Google Earth - even the free one. This is a great way to visualise your fishing trip or check the location of marks given on the internet. It's amazing how much bullsh!t is floating around!!

I've had a gps 72 and now a 60. the 60 is heaps better. easier to use. better resolution. more memory. the usb is heaps faster than the serial port connection of the early model.

tiny tinny, I'm keen to know how you display marks on google earth. any tips would be greatly appreciated!

    Re: Displaying on Google Earth

To display GPS info on Google Earth, load your waypoints, tracks and routes to MapSource, which you should have got on the CD with your GPS. If not, I think it is available free from the Garmin web site.

In MapSource click on "View" on the menu at the top of the screen, then click on "View in Google Earth". It's that simple! Google Earth should open automatically (if you don't have it open already) and display all your GPS data.

PM me if you have any problems.

Perhaps I should add that the MapSource software is also good for:

    1) Typing in waypoints (much quicker to use a computer keyboard than the cumbersome up-down-left-right-select needed on the GPS)

    2) Backing up your waypoints and especially tracks, which you can save on your PC and delete them from the GPS. This frees up the GPS memory for more trips, but you can reload the saved tracks to the GPS at any time in the future. As mentioned, you can also view them on Google Earth.

    3) If you have mapping capabilities and the map files to go with it, you have a lot more options. Unfortunately budget limitations meant I got the non-mapping GPS, but it's still a wonderful tool for fishing and navigation.

    4) Even if you don't have a mapping GPS, you can display the info on Google Earth, then save a screen image using control+S. You can do this for all the areas you fish, and then print the images.

The thing I love about the GPS60 is the USB connection. It literally takes only a few seconds to transfer the data either way. I also like having a backup of all my data on the PC, just in case something goes wrong on the GPS.

I have discovered this stuff by mucking about with the thing. I am sure there are many more features I haven't figured out. If anyone else has any tricks, please post them.

    Re: handheld garmin gps 60

    That's strange. Perhaps:

    1) You don't have the latest version of MapSource. You can update it by clicking on the "Help" drop-down menu.

    2) Perhaps you need to have some waypoints or other data in the MapSource program before trying to view in Google Earth?

    3) I assume you have Google Earth installed. Have you tried starting Google Earth manually before trying the "View" menu in MapSource?

Otherwise I'm stumped. Let us know how you get on.

This is how my screen appears. I have version 6.11.3 of MapSource.

The mapsource disc that came with my Gps 60 is version 2.02 and was told to update the software asap to utilize the functions better. This is my first Gps and found it easy to use and understand (after I read the manual)

Update your Mapsource & you will get that function.
