I have a PDA pocket PC for use on the road, but i would like to know if there is software available to use it as a marine gps. Mainly just to set favourite spots and navigate to a coordinate. Currrent TOMTOM and Destinator programs don't allow for this function. Would save having to buy a dedicated GPS. Don't get to the coast often enough yet to warrant explaining to $outlay to the wife!!
There are quite a few PDA based moving map software packages available. Three which I've found to be well supported and reasonably priced are Memory-Map Navigator, OziExplorer and Fugawi. If you google for the names you will find demo versions which can be downloaded and run for a trial period. All three are under $200 to buy.
I use Memory-Map myself. The thing I like about it is the transparency between the PC and PDA based versions. You can transfer maps, tracks, routes and waypoints to/from the PC/PDA without any additional steps. The software cost includes both versions as well.
Oziexplorer and Fugawi run a close second, but I found their PDA interface functions lacking. Ozi has a separate program to convert maps to the PDA format and the PDA and PC versions are purchased separately.
I bought the MSQ Queensland Chart set, which has all the maps geo-referenced and in the correct format for the three packages mentioned above. They are not as comprehensive as Bluechart etc, but are fine as the electronic equivalent of the Beacon2Beacon. More details here -> http://www.maptrax.com.au/marinecharts/
I may as well reply to my own question seeing how i have found the ideal software. I located a program called BeelineGPS from an company called VirtualGPS9 www.virtualgps.net The program was designed for geocaching but has all the features of a stand alone gps. Quick and easy waypoint entry, heading, bearing, route tracking and nav to coordinates. There is a 30 day trial version but registration is only au$40. Highly recomended for any pocket pc navigator
