Sounder Up Grade

I'm looking to up grade my sounder from a basic Hummingbird to a unit in the $500 - $700 range. It will be used only in bay & river conditions. Is it worth looking at a basic color unit or a top end Mono model.
I have noticed, compared to my 7 year old unit, the Mono units on display (Lowrance) seem to have poor visibility under Fluro lights. I imagine this will be ever worse under direct sun light.
Is this a ploy to get you to buy color units
