    27meg problems

Hi all, I have a few questions in relation to 27meg radios.

    1. do you need a license to use them as I have had mixed advise on this.

    2. I have a 60 E-Tech and cant use the radio when the motor is running due to interferance. Any ideas?

    Thanks Jim

    1. Operators of 27mhz equipment are not required to hold a certificate but are strongly encouraged to obtain one.

    2. how have you run your cabling. keep your ariel cable away from your main power cables. if that doesnt work you can always try a line filter on the power suplling you radio.

    1. Friend told me the VMR would not let him contact them by radio until he had a licence? so he uses a mobile.

    2. Areial is near the main console and the battery is under the other console. boat has to go back to the dealer for a recall on the E-Tech so I will ask them to have a look seeing that they're the ones's who put it in.

    Thanks for the quick response

    Re: 27meg problems

Gidday Jim, Black_Jack knows his stuff and is right, neither the operator nor the set itself require licensing. (The set is covered by a class license).
Users are encouraged to gain a license... or at least sit in on a course, as if a person is unfamiliar with proceedure/protocol, there can be problems with communicating clearly. This seems to be the case in this instance, I STRONGLY urge your friend to contact the VMR/Coastguard/RCP or whatever and get them to clarify this no license, no communication policy. What I suspect may be the case is either one of 3 things, he radioed during the silence period, called on Ch 88 the distress safety and calling channel to be used only to make initial contact except in an emergency, or that this may be a Coastguard unit that no longer monitors 27mhz radio. (Apparantly some no longer have these sets so cant recieve).
Any rescue unit, no matter which organisation that refuses to recieve radio calls on 27mhz because of licensing issues, collectively need their heads read. I have NEVER heard of any Rescue Unit asking a person contacting them if they had a Radio License before communicating or not communicating with them. Volunteers are not enforcemeant officers, nor should they be... I have never heard of anyone refusing a call especially in preference to recieving calls on a mobile phone... this is THE LEAST PREFERRED METHOD OF COMMUNICATION.
Hope the info helps, I am sure it is all just a big missunderstanding via a breakdown in communication.
    Kind Regards
    Lloyd

    Thanks for the help.
I have not joined the vmr yet but plan to very soon. Think I will do the course just to be on the safe side.

    Re: 27meg problems

    Hi Jim
Go to Repco / Autobarn or whatever and get a noise reducing filter for audio applications, follow the instructions on the back, but generally join the positive lead to one cable then the other cable onto the other line of the filter.
It shouldn't affect the workings of the radio, and should eliminate the noise from the ignition.

PM me if you are unsure or if you want some help, I am in Brissy on the north side
