    Fuel Guage not reading

Hi folks - any ideas/ help welcome on this one - fuel guage has stopped reading - wiring seems all OK and in tact from a casual observation, and also looks OK at connections on the tank (although some rust) Have done the usual layman 'twiddling around' with all wires to no avail> What would some appropriate trial and error step by step checking be from here?

    Thansk in anticipation.

Does the gauge needle flick when the power is turned on?

Check the voltage coming back from the sender to the gauge, should be between 0 and 12 but should be less than battery voltage and will depend on fuel level in the boat.

What I have described is the easiest way to determine your next step.. the sender or a gauge or possibly still... the wiring which is most likely the problem.

The gauge on my boat stopped working and couldn't find what was wrong, found that the fuel pickup line had moved in the tank and was holding the sender down, just moved the hose to a new location in tank and now it works fine.

    Hey Fellas
I have just had a feul flowmeter installed for the NAVMAN chartplotter and it is brilliant [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]
I dont even bother looking at my actual gauge now

Well worth the investment of $200 (was at mates rates though) would probably expect $250 -$300 more liklely

hi lawry this recently happened to me. >
mine was the float in the sender unit had filled with fuel.
new sender unit was big $ so I came up with a fix.
I found a carby float at the local servo and inserted it inside the sender float.
cost was zip works again and I,m happy

    hey moondancer.
fuel senders are #$^%& of things id say your float is probably broken off. i would undo the screws and pull the sender out and check it and if it is stuffed then id go buy universal one and put that in not to expensive.

    MD,

when mine played up I found that inside of just measuring resistance or voltage, it was doing a balancing act like that Wheatstone Bridge they taught us about at school.
Mine used to stop reading as soon as I got the slightest bit of corrosion on the terminals. (Every trip on the salt water.)

Problems stopped when I soldered the connections on to the tank sending unit.

    I'm with Murks,

The Navman Fuel transponder is the best $200 i've spent on my boat.

    Cheers
