    lost signal

Hi all, we went on a M/G on the weekend at Cardwell, about 2.5 hour drive south of Cairns
on Saturday morning i turned on the GPS and it took about 2hrs for it to find signal, at first i thought there was a problem with the GPS, when it did fire up it was great, all worked good

on Sunday we went out again, turned on the GPS and nothing, i unplugged and repluggrd the unit and still nothing
the GPS couldnt pick up all day

got back to Cairns on Sunday evening to drop off my mate, so i wanted to check the unit, turned it on and it picked up all good. ( took about 15sec )

got back to my place, turned the unit on and if was running great also

did anyone else have any trouble picking up sattlelites with there GPS over the weekend???
i will ring Markwell marine today and have a chat with them also

any other ideas as of why this occured?

    thanx

This is what my Navman 5500 was doing some weeks back and then it failed completely. Sent it back and they repaired it free out of warranty.

    1. This will not be a satellite problem, the satellites are fine, all 28 and 1/2 of them .

ok, i think i have found the problem, as this was the first time i have used the new GPS
what i did not do was "graphically initialize the GPS"
yesterday while working at home i jumped on the boat and turned on the GPS and all is working great, i did this 4-5 times during the day and each time it never had any probs,
i will see how it goes in open waters next time

    Re: lost signal

    1. The reception you describe is not an initialization problem.

    2. Once initialized (at indicated by eventually working Saturday), even from a completely cold start then you would have to relocate about 500 miles to notice any reluctance to get lock. In any case once initialized and relocated then it should only take 15-20 minutes max.

    3. Worked Saturday (after 2 hours), wouldn't work at all Sunday (all day), worked back in Cairns about 150 km away is not an initialization problem as 150km wouldn't make much difference.

    Re: lost signal

    thanx for your feedback satnav
i took the GPS in to where i brought it from, and they plugged it in to there gear and it fired up within 10sec or so, he said theres nothing wrong with the unit,
also they ran me thru the GPS system
one thing that was'nt turned on was the " auto search for the satelitte "

    cheers
