Looking  for information on rewiring half cab

    Hay all
I'm looking for some information on rewiring my fiberglass half cab. there seems to be wires running everywhere. I think every time they added something they just stuck it in. I'm sure I can simplify it.

Run a positive and negitive from the bat upto the cab 3mm should do it. Buy 2 buzz bars one positve and other negitive then connect all electronics to them saves having wiring all up and down the side of the boat also so much current drag.

Use tinned wire and put fuses in line to suit.

Just be careful when asking for 3mm cable at an Auto-Electrical shop. 3mm Auto cable would not be sufficient, you would have to ask for 6mm tinned automotive cable.

    Gidday Craigathome,
There was a good thread a little while ago covering that same subject.
It was very informative and had pictures to boot.
Just do a search for rewire and see what pops up.
Aah, stuff it, I did the search for you

You may also find the BEP Marine site http://www.bepmarine.com/ a good source of info. Follow Battery Management and Tech Info for wiring diagrams etc.

To get good long term connections to crimps, solder the connection, rather than just crimping.

    Kind regards
    Trevor

Re: Looking for information on rewiring half cab

The link Finga gave is very good.
I just put a post on that thread, but will also put it here.

The bus bar is the best way to go.
For the main line use 6mm tinned copper, double sheathed wire - available from bias boating for $5 m

Put a waterproof 30 amp fuse on the main line at the battery.

When connecting the sounder etc to the bus bar, always put the correct size fuse for the appliance.

The bus bars are available in red and black bars, places like turks electrical, ideal electrical. They are about $23 each. Expensive, but well worth it.

Solder all connections. - do not use crimped terminal connectors ... you are asking for trouble.

    Cheers

    Pete

Very impressive Pete!!! Glad there are still people who run electricals properly... Been a bug bear of mine since my old electronics days. It's so much easier to troubleshoot/fix problems when everything is laid out nice and neat.

    Yeah, thanks Guys,

Neat wiring is an obsessive compulsive addiction of mine

But, yes, if you take your time, it isnt all that hard.

Problem is ... everybody is an electrician... and a fibreglasser.... and a mechanic.... and thats why things get messy

Half my work comes from repairing things that people have already fixed themselves

I should show you some of the wiring installations in the last two 35 Caribbeans we just fitted with big Raymarine packages..... wiring looms as thick as your arm... and we virtually have to hide them !

Ahh well ... all good fun I suppose

    Cheers
