Thread: What to do with an old epirb

Re: What to do with an old epirb

    Just a thought Lloyd
What if, when you disabled it, leave the battery in it and bypass the cidcuit that sets off the epirb but leave the circuit that activates the test light so it was still in a semifuntional roll. That way people could play with it in the test position.

Thanks fat chilli, very informative. It would seem I have been too pre-occupied with refurbishing my boat, rebuilding the trailer, rebuilding steering, fitting new sounder and have lost touch with other no less important things. Have heard new life jacket laws may be on the way, and must check if anything has changed with GPS change over.

I gave that a thought myself but I sure has hell havent got the clues to do that and dont know anyone into electronics that would be confident enough to deactivate the transmission curcuits. I would hate to think someone has disabled it, and then I use it at a course and have a hellicopter hovering overhead.... I might contact the manufacturer and see if they will do it for me.

another way would be to snip off and remove the circuit board, remove the led warning light for test. Then wire a normal globe to the battery and hook up to the test side of the switch, this way there would be no danger of false alarms.

    Mate check out this link.

Whitworths have them for $400. I got one yesterday from northside marine (it's closer to me) because they matched the price.

Now what is this 406hz system and is it going to take over, making us have to buy new epirbs. Relise regulations are always being changed and find it hard to keep up with latest and greatest.
That would probably be a Salcom and is was very convenient to be able to replace the batteries off the shelf, even though they only had a 2 year in-service life between battery changes.

However with recent legislation changes requiring Epirb's to be serviced by "authorized" people this option has effectively been closed.

406 system? is a more effective digital satellite tracked system than the 121.5 anologue system. 121.5 is not suited and was enver designed for satellite detection as well as causing considerable numbers of false alerts. Out of every 100 121.5 detections 98 are false alerts resulting in quite an amount of expense and effort for nothing.

Even though the announcment to terminate 121.5 detection was made quite some years ago I would be expecting authorities in Australia to bring forward the change by date to sometime in (early) 2008 ???, well before the actual 121.5 detection capacity is actually terminated in February 2009.

    Regards, Kerry.
