What to do with an old epirb

Hey fellas, just wondering what you do with an out of date epirb. Mine ran out in July and I've upgraded to the new digital one. I don't want to put it in the bin in case it activates.

If anyone wants it let me know

some VMR bases take out of date flares, so maybe they are a good place to ask?

    Craig,
depending on the model the old ones are fairly easy to screw apart/dismantle - disconnect/remove the battery and it can then be safely disposed of.

how much are they to get re-tested?
someone might want one if cheap enough to get tested to last untill 406MHz only comes into effect

Open it up - take the battery out to deactivate and have a look inside . You will be amazed by how much such a litlte amount of electronics costs .

I was given a brand new (never taken near a boat), Pains-Wessex 121.5/243 MHz EPIRB by a mate who won it a as boat show door prise years ago, I was happy, the test light worked, it was still in it's packaging, then I looked at the expiry date, May 98, then I wasn't so happy .

So I contacted Pains-Wessex about battery replacement, recertification etc. They wanted $130 to replace the battery, it wasn't worth it when you can buy a GME 121.5/243 for $160 or less now. So I saved and bought a 406 for $399 at the Boat show and picked up a free 12 month magazine subscription.

Anyone want a Pains-Wessex 121.5 - as stated, it will cost $130 to replace the battery?

The idea about keeping it as a back sounds like the best option. One on the boat, one in the grab bag.

at a $130 you wouldn't bother with the old one getting re-tested
keep it as a back up would be a good bet.
where do you get a 406 for $400? I will have to get one before Fraser comp in May next year. Don't require one in close in NSW YET! but I bet won't be far off. Makes good sense but waiting for the price to drop a bit.

Craig, if you are in Brissy and dont want it I am after one to hand around at my radio courses for demonstration purposes.
The battery will be removed by me and I wil damage the board so it is totally inoperable.
We used to have both a 121.5/243 plus a 406 epirb at VMR Victoria Point for display purposes but they walked a couple of years back. Naturaly I am very aprehensive of handing around active epirbs so our operable ones stay in the boats.
Anyway, if you decide you dont want it, let me know, I would be more than happy to take it off your hands.

Re: What to do with an old epirb

I replaced the batteries in mine my self. Open it up and found it took from memory 8 d cell batteries. The original date was written on and changed that as well. Passed inspection by fisheries. As I don't want to go out to the shed I can't tell you of hand what brand etc it is but I do remember it was made in NZ.

Now what is this 406hz system and is it going to take over, making us have to buy new epirbs. Relise regulations are always being changed and find it hard to keep up with latest and greatest.

Murf - GME had a deal going at the Brissy Boat Show a few months back, most of the retail store displays (gme dealers) at the show had them for this price, with the free mag subscription to Fishing World. There coming down slowly .
