    Wet Box Fill Media

    Hi Team!

I want to know the reasons why different media with different viscosities are used in Wet Boxes?

What is it (from a chemical composition point of view) that determines the type of media used in Wet boxes?

Why is it important that ducers designed for wet boxes require certain media to operate properly inside the wet box?

This information will assist with my decision what to use when filling my wet box..

I knwo this may be a leading question some of you dirty men, so I will get in first - I am not wanting to use spoof/semen -for my transducer wet box anyway..

I do belive that Parafin oil was always used, but I have seen some Silicon based oil used now, bugger if you get it on your clothes, you can never wash it out

When i set my wet box up i first used water just to make sure everything was working fine.I was told baby oil works well but found i was getting to many bubbles.
Did some more research and asked a few questions and most people suggested glycerine. The reason for this is because it is very stable and you will not get the air bubbles.
I can get a bottom reading at 45 kph and i only have a humminbird wide.

    Thanks 2DKnB.

I am thinking of going to Propyllene glycol antifreeze - as this is what Airmar now recommends.

But I will certainly keep glycerine on the radar..

Hav'nt seen semen come up yet as an ideal WET BOX MEDIA....

2DKnB - To hold bottom at 45kph is an excelelnt effort!

What soudner do u use and where in boat have you placed your wetbox?

    Re: Wet Box Fill Media

Got myself some propylene-glycol today to fill my wet box - pretty damn hard to get in small quantities!

Anyway - this is the current recommendation by Airmar..

I am currently running a Humminbird Wide.
The set up i have is rather primative.Consists of 110mm pvc with a screw cap for the top.The trans is mounted under the cap with the pipe cut on an angle and sikaflexed to the inside of the hull. The unit is set up down the back in my 17 R.

    Re: Wet Box Fill Media

    G'day Smelly,

The wetbox medium is not critical, hence so many different suggestions.
The only reason you need a wet medium, is because a transducer wont run in air.

To keep air bubbles out of any liguid in a wetbox, make sure the wetbox is aver full of liquid before you put the cap on ... no air space = no bubbles.

Before you fill your wetbox, check whether the Sika 291 you were going to use is compatible with the Propylene Glycol

I used transmision Dex fluid seems to do the trick , although i have tested it yet as the bloody weather is shocking >

Q Pete , is it nessacary to seal the lid ?

    Re: Wet Box Fill Media

    G'day Mick,

It is imporrtant to seal the lid, otherwise you are going to slop oil everywhere when underway, it is also a fire hazard.

Also it will become contaminated with salt water over time ... so take the time, do it once and do it properly.

Look at it this way ... if you paid me to come to your house and install it, I doubt you would be happy if I lefth an open container of oil?

    Cheers

ps - I use distilled water

    Re: Wet Box Fill Media

    Thanks boys.

    Hi GM,

You stated "...make sure the wetbox is aver full of liquid before you put the cap on.."

Airmar specifically state to fill wet box 1/4 way, then insert the M260 ducer with lid clamped and then continue to fill box through the vent hole..

I can understand this becuse if you insert the ducer into a wetbox full of liquid, then won't you disperse the liquid with overflow ove rthe side of the box?

By the way - what approx. volume is does the wetbox for the M260 hold?

(I understand this volume will vary by about 5% due to the different V-angles of hulls..)

    Thoughts?

PS - what does "aver" mean?

    Re: Wet Box Fill Media

In the ones I have installed it stated a volume to tip into the wetbox.

Thats one of the reasons I use distilled water ... you can overflow the box to make sure it is full, and the spillage doesnt matter at all.

Any one could work out if there is air space and turbulance - then you are going to aerate any liquid ... no matter what it is.

I offer you my experience in good faith, but you dont have to listen to a word I say, and by your replies you infer that I dont know what I am talking about.

I will leave it at that ... no doubt you have it sorted out.

    Cheers

    Pete
