Sounder won't read at high speed

    Hello Sounder gurus.

I have a Furuno that reads very well at low speed and at rest but not when underway. The transducer is properly installed so I'm suspecting its a setting in the unit.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers.

more often than not its caused by the postition of the transducer, maybe set up as per instructions but they still need fine tuning

Re: Sounder won't read at high speed

I'd go for the transducer. There a million reasons why sounders won't read at speed, most have do do with tranducer installation.

I'll assume that it is transom mounted, not "through hull"?

"properly installed" is a black art, depending on the hull shape, bottom irregularities, sea conditions, etc, etc. it cannot be depended on for reliable readings.

Basically the heavier the boat and the deeper the hull Vee the "cleaner" the water at the transducer/water interface and so the better the reading at speed. Transom mounts on light weight small boats, especially alloy, in choppy conditions aren't good for high speed readings.

Try adjusting the trany down a bit further before drilling any more holes.
If no better, try spending a bit of time hanging over the back at speed (hang on tight!) looking for "clean water" coming off the hull bottom. Consider shifting the trany to shoot through this.

When you have solved the problem, let me know 'cause mine isn't perfect either!

Blaze I suspect you are right. I just spoke to FURUNO and they suggested that its air bubbles from the hull.

I'll try dropping it and see how it goes.

    Thanks.

No more than 3mm below the hull , on the slightest of down angle . [smiley=wink.gif]

    Hi Mark
I respeckfully disagree with your statement, on a v hull 3mm below on one side how much on the other side. To get a clean read on mine at 30knts it is about 10mm below, it creates a lot of spray but I have a clean screen. To eleminate the spray I have fitted a spray deflector.
To me its not about mm, its about clean water

Blaze I have a 2002 quinnie , I followed the instructions to a tee & have no probs @ 30knt . The sounder is a Furuno as well .. The quinnie is pretty flat at the transom

About 10mm on the high side .

Re: Sounder won't read at high speed

    G-day guys

I have had the same problem, i have the furuno 6100 on an ally boat at speed i lose everything, I run it on manual and I have it set up right, if i am in 300ft of water perfect until i get up on plane but even in the bay no good .I put an adjustable transducer mount on and have moved it up and down and have also adjusted the angel a dozen times.

Maybe get some type of tab on the boat to create some clean water as there is a fair amount of weld that would be creating extra wash?

    Thanks.
Mark (Pitsta), I have the Airmar P66 same as you. I have just dropped it another 10mm vertically so now its 3mm below the transom at the shallow end and about 20mm at the deep end. The boat has 23degrees of deadrise so it really exagerates the projection below the hull.

    Will see how that goes.

It amazes me that that don't have brackets that are more adjustable. Once on the P66 is really hard ot get off the mount to get at the screws.

    Cheers,

Wow! Is that fibreglass? If so, think about a through hull installation which I think are more reliable at high speed.

The best option then is two transducers: one through hull for fast work, and a switch to the transom unit for slow sounding.

    Hi all,

    so what is high speed?

My Furuno + p66 is ok up to certain speeds, 15knts, maybe near 20, but gone after that.

How much use is seeing the bottom at 30 knts?? By the time you saw it, it would be gone????

Handy to see how deep it is sometimes. Especially in the bay.
When you say gone is that everything or just picture of the bottom.

make sure your gain is high, your transmission (Tx) power is high and the Tx rate is on 10.
After following lots of threads on this site it appears that transducer mounting is the main culprit.
i lose the bottom (with 620 ) but not depth reading at about 25ks and figure that I'm better off watching where I'm going rather than where Ive been.
