Thread: Navman external Antenna

    Re: Navman external Antenna

Well this is only an amputation not brain surgery and really does not make a lot of sense to start attacking the main board just to shorten a cable.

Since Navman don't help we have yet to find out exactly what the plug type is? Petnic?

Pete, Can't say I'm all that fussed with cutting and shutting and especially not with TV repair men

    Regards, Kerry.

    Pete
The unit i had was pulled out of a boat and the cable had been cut so i got a joiner the same style as the plugs on the cable which are bayonet type. It didnt seem to have any effect on the unit . I have since changed to a navman plotter , which i notice has a screw on type plug ,check dick smith or tandy ( same company) to see what type of plugs they have.
I can't imagine why joining or putting a new plug on a cable would have any effect on the unit .

Yep, agree wholeheartedly with that. No doubts or reservations at all
But if you can't get a plug to suit then brain surgery has got to be a better long term option then cut and shunt cables.
This of course is IF you can get inside the antenaa to start with.

Mind you though there's some pretty good coax joiners now-a-days

I had a bit of a squizz at the manual that's on the net and the pictures are pretty bad to try and see what plug they use.

For a plug have a try at
http://www.jaycar.com.au/ or http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp or http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/connectors.php (this one has pretty pictures and some details) and see what you can find
Try the tnc, bnc or mcx plugs or connectors to see if they're remotely similar

I don't know why but I have a funny feelings the wire used in those isn't a coax but a multi-cored conductor. Don't know why but I just have a feeling in my tummy about it.

Any further decisions have been put on hold until we get to see what the plug is on the end of this GPS antenna.

    Re: Navman external Antenna

    Hi
My navman 5380 gps has a coax cable, The plug is what I would descibe as a mini F connector with a commpression crimp to hold to cable. The centre of the coax forms the pin to go into the gps unit and the earthing side is via the external part of the connector. The F connector type fitting has the female end on the cable onto the male part on the gps.

    Re: Navman external Antenna

This is the information i received from " Navman technical support" i posted previously
"The antenna cable is a coaxial cable. Navman do not shorten cables but
if you wanted to cut it and rejoin it that would be possible However it
would void the warranty on the antenna"

Then this arrived this morning from Navman Australia ,

    Peter,

    Thank you for your enquiry.
In response to your query, the antenna cable cannot be shortened. It is
surrounded by plastic sheaths to deflect interference. If this is to be
cut, it will affect the performance of the antenna.

You will need to coil the remaining length.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

Looks like coiling is the only option
many thanks for everybodys input on this topic
    cheers
    Pete

    bugger eh
Oh well another job to do now.
Put some masking tape on the fiberglass before you drill a hole though. Just to reduce possible chipping of the glass

    Re: Navman external Antenna

Would I shorten it NO, can it be shortened, YES, but the correct connector would need to be fitted to it and that would prevent the problem navman are saying you would have, after all, they have just terminated the cable with the correct connection.

    Re: Navman external Antenna

as scott[ finga ] said why not just pull the dome apart shorten and rejoin[just like a power lead that has a cut in the outer cover or a dud male end]. to me thats the way i would go, besides what goes wrong with a dome???? just my ideas anyway look outside the square cheers sid

    Re: Navman external Antenna

Ah be buggered! We make our own GPS antenna cables of varying length almost everyday controlling millions (literally hundreds of millions) of dollars worth of equipment in real time and yet a 200 buck marine antenna coax cable supposedly can't be cut, what a load of crap!

    Regards, Kerry.

    ain't that the truth.
The only really tricky part is getting the plug to do it properly or getting into the 'dome'
You've given a laugh Kerry. Well done matey
You've reminded me of my dad and pop with that Ah, be buggered.

My tech. teacher would have a giggle at that too.
Probably better to keep the factory setup though. Purely for the warantee.
