Thread: Sounder Reading

    Re: Sounder Reading

Yeah, i think my transducer is tilting a lil too much up, i plan to fix this with a couple of small washers under the bracket to help face it down that fraction more. but i'm still happy with the result at the present time...

I use to have a Humminbird 727 B&W unit which had a pixel rating of 640 x 480. Looked magnificent on the screen, but IMO colour is easier to look at.

Oh by the way.. all those pictures i just posted were at 4 - 5kts whilst trolling... Hope i didn't give too many secret spots away with the GPS marks showing. lol.

oh for sure that picture is sweet, even with the transducer at an angle it still gives a million times more detail than mine.

Yeah the GPS marks would help if i was 8 hrs further north

    Re: Sounder Reading

    Hi to everyone
Great read but I would like to ask a question that might seem
stupid.I am very new to this boat fishing and sounder reading as
all my life I have fished the rocks.I have a 585 Furuno and I have never
seen a classic arch as you see in the text books so to speak. Now i read
Rick Huckstep book on sounders so i realise that there are a few factors
involved to get a perfect arch.So I have to ask whether the Furuno digital sounders get a classic arch reading(like a Lowrance souder) or am I looking
for something that I will never get.
Do digital sounders show different things as to the classic arch readings?
Please could some One help me as it is slowly doing my head in as I'am not sure
whether it's the sounder or the angle of the transducer.

    Cheers Nick

    Re: Sounder Reading

    Thanks Stuie
I have been looking and I can't say that I have seen
the perfect arch on the Furuno's.That's why I am wondering
whether that's because digital readings are showen differently
than analogue on the screen.Or is it just different brands of sounders
show things there own special way so to speak?
    Thanks for the reply

    Cheers Nick

    Re: Sounder Reading

make sure your scroll speed is high. a high scroll speed will display more data on screen, hense a more defined image of what you've been over.

i have seen full arches on a Furuno sounder, but not to the extent of a Lowrance or Humminbird

    Re: Sounder Reading

    Nick,
fish arches are mainly a factor of transducer beam angle. Wider beam angle more arch effect. Furuno sounders have a very narrow beam 200khz transducer. the 50khz is much wider. You may see some wider beam angle 200khz transducers as an option in the near future. Digital v analogue has very little effect
    Cheers

    Re: Sounder Reading

Thanks very much for the replies.
I will try everything every that Local Guy and Beardedone
said.I will have to except that I might not see a well defined arch
    as lowrance or hummingbird show.
Believe me I know it doesn't make any difference.
And now I know I'am very happy.

    thanks Nick

After reading this thread i have looked at the sounder more and not just to see how deep it is. Just wanted to know if these are fish or not?

    Re: Sounder Reading

the first 2 images look like a tree laying on it's side... what was your location on these pics.

3rd pic could be fish, or coule be another small tree on the bottom.

4th pic could be a fish thats smimming off the bottom, but looking at the pic looks like your anchored.

one think you should do with your sounder is make use of all the pixels.. adjust the screen so the bottom is only taking up 1/5th the screen at the bottom. not 1/2 of it like you have it here.

Barry, I'd say yes they are fish. Looks like they are schooled around a rock/tree something. the 4th pic would suggest they are active by the separation between lines, you can see one fish is moving up off the bottom awat from the pack. You get similar images with schooled bass in dams. Thats what it looks like to me anyway.

    Re: Sounder Reading

does this rick huckstep book relate to all kinds of sounders?

    Re: Sounder Reading

    short answer Yes.

but it's based around the Lowrance colour units. all good sounders have basically the same features anyway. it's worth every cent of $15.
