    FCV 585 performance

Hi just wondering if anybody has a 585 on there boat with the 600 watt transom mount transducer and what depths you are picking up with it reliably I fish in over 100fathoms so i just want to know if i need to go to the 1 kw transducer.I was reading on another site about a fellow how recons he was getting 2500ft out of the fcv620 that seems to good to be true.

I've got the 620 and although it's not been in that depth yet it definatey outperforms the older 600L I had.

Furuno claim 2500ft for both the 620 and the 585 with 600 watts. The old 582 was also 600 watts and if people with that unit had no problems at 100 fath I'm sure you'd be ok as the digital processing has really impressed me.

I also heard the 1kw transducer was very expensive so the cost all up with 1kw vs. 600w is significant.

If you can afford it go for the 1kw i got one prior to selling my 582 the differance it made was awsome I have not had it deeper yet than the 50s with my 585. With the 1 kw on the 582 i got 700 odd meters

The transducers that actually support 1,000 watts are significantly better accoustically than their 600 watt counterparts as they all employ some fashion of multi-element system, normally a single 200khz element and some form of multiple 50khz element system, so you actually get more than just 400 watts more output power. You can find out alot more about the differences in transducers (down to extreme geek level) at AirMar's website, along with screen snapshots comparing the same area with both a 600 watt and a 1kw transducer. I have the Airmar 260

I've have just fitted a 585 with the 1kw Airmar 260 in hull( shoot through) transducer in my 5.2 kevlacat.

I could not be happier with the performance we were of the shelf on wednesday chasing blues and were seeing bottom in 600m and clearly marking blue eye/ harpuka in 460 meters

In 200khz it reads well to about 80m but it's in 50khz that it really performs! I can run full gain when cruising in any thing deeper than 10 m with No screen noise at all and in the mid range depths with its wider beam 19'as opposed to 6' in the 200khz it really picks up the fish even at 24knots

found some new ground wednesday that i driven over before and not noticed but the new set up really showed me what i was missing.

I find all this very interesting as i am about to purchase a new sounder...my old Lowrance x15-mt ..1 KW Trannie reads ok at 260 fathom but the mono screen is getting a bid out dated and i want color..so its time to upgrade....I must say though i also run a Raymarine DS 500 and it was reading at 260 Fathom...but soon as i powered at over 3 knots i lost picture...Is there anything else on the market that performs as well as the Furuno...

Ian, could you please tell me more about your sounder setup, as I'm also runin a Kcat 5.2. Did you mount that 1 kw transducer in the rear inspection well? in some kind of wet box.
    Thanks Chris

the first thing you have to realize is that with the airmar 260 your just not getting a extra 400khz , your getting a much, much more sensitive transducer, 50 times more sensitive in 50 khz and 13 times more sensitive in 200khz

The cost of a airmar 260 is $1350 plus fitting ( it comes in it's own wet box that is cut to fit your hull shape)

    for more info try www.airmar.com

yes i mounted it in the starboard rear hull through the spin out. To say it just fitted is an understatement you actually have to remove the whole spin out and then cut 4 little triangles into the hole for the spin out so as the corners of the suplied wet box fit through ( square peg in a round hole senario) these will be covered with the base of the spin out when the base is stuck down at the end.It will fit though!! Then i mounted it on the outside of the stringer and seems to read very well. It looses punch in the 200khz at about 80m but the 50khz is just so good it doesn't matter. The 50khz is a 19 deg beam as opposed to 6 deg for the 200hz so you really see alot more bottom during your search. Pm me your ph no. if you want any more info

ps the sounder dimentions including wet box are about 8 1/2 inches long 41/2 inches wide and 6 inches high, so it's a big lump of a transducer
