Thread: Best colour sounder/gps for under $2K

Sometime too high a pixel count can be a disadvantage as details are displayed as very fine lines, blobs etc and difficult to see in daylight.

I think the pixel count is a compromise where once you reach a reasonable level any extra just adds cost with no real benifit.

    Just MHO.

Roydsy, the one my dad has is the Lowrance LCX 25C. Great unit as i said and is just under the 2k mark (ignore the RRP on the website).

    http://www.lowrance.com.au/home/sonar_gps/lcx_25c

Can't find the model hummingbird i was talking about yet but will let you know.

Mark, not saying your wrong mate but... a sounder with a higher pixel count will display more detail on everything below than one with less pixels.. staying this you will get more finer lines/marks on the one with more pixels.. on the other model with less pixels you may not even get a line/blob/single pixel to show what the other is picking up. this has to be a good thing right??

You are right about reaching a resonable level for cost but I belive this level would be different for different fishermen and there budgets.

There is a great dvd out about how to read and setup your sounder. it was put out by lowrance but talks about general setup and reading of sounders and is well worth watching I have resetup my little sounder after watching it and am getting sooo much more out of it than i was!! eg: one thing they mention is that the quicker the scroll rate you run your sounder at the more infomation is displayed on screen hence missing less infomation! yes you have to watch it more often but the benifit is getting that extra info about what is lurking below

    Cheers
    Brandon..

    Thumbs up

How is it going the decision only gets harder as i said befor thefuruno has much better software that more than makes up for lack of pixels i had an lcx15mt lowrance before a great mono unit but the lcx25c would be my next choice in a combo unit i would buy lowrance over the eagle every time the 25c has a 640x 480 pixel count and much better software over the eagle also the connecting plugs on the lowrance are much better for those who take their electronics out all the time ihope this sheds some more light

I'm a "newby" here to this site. I've been looking at sounders as well and after speaking to a dealer about pixel count I was adivised as follows: Too many pixels can also be an issue as the resolution becomes too fine and seems to "wash out" on the smaller displays. he sowed me in the showroomn and although it looks great on demo mode in the shop he referred me to a website to see an article on the Furuno FCV585. From what I read I was pretty impressed and I have been assured that the smaller brother and more in line with my budget the fCV620 is as good. http://www.taylormarine.com.au/main....wsdetail&id=60

    I am still undecided

I have been told new models are coming out soon from the eagle camp (end Jan/mid feb) so I will continue to do the research.

I most likely will purchase my sounder from overseas as I can get the same model sounder for half the price after dollar conversion and postage and insurance. Yes warranty is a concern but the savings far out weigh any postage back for warranty purposes.

Some good advice in this thread, cheers and keep the opinions coming as it is all helpful for others making this difficult decision.

Oh and the X-25 looks very nice, it seems like it will take my navionics maps, now i just need to find the best price here and overseas and make a decision.

Not enough time in the day, to many spots to fish!
