    Charters Towers

Me and a mate are thinking of going to charters towers next weekend for some sooty fishing. Anyone have any info on where to go? do you know if any other species live around there, ive heard there is australian bass. Any opinions on fishing this area will be appreciated. Thanks

Went fishing there just recently at Selheim (30km before CT) behind my mums place (up stream from Bivuac Junction) plenty of fish. Caught one sooty amongst a whole heap of fish that look similar in shape but have a yellowy gut, small mouth and a little greyer in colour. I was told they are introduced species and to leave them on the bank. Never found out what they were, didn't look like talapia. Apparently not good tucker either. Fished with a bit of steak on hook. The sooty was pretty fat and was good on the bbq. Good luck!

Cheers for that. Sounds like yellow belly maybe. If it is then theyre deffinetly not introduced. Was it the burdeken river that you fished? i believe that is the river we are going to, about 20 mins short of charters towers. Will be going this sunday and lure casting for starters, if things quiet down we may throw out a livey.
What's it like for walking up the river around there? difficult or easy?

Yep, Budekin's right. #Easy walk up the banks. #You'll find there are quite a few tracks been laid down by 4x4s. #The sand can get quite soft when the day is hot (got the pajero bogged under the bridge last year-wanted to try the fly gear but ended up looking after the car!). #There's good variation between flowing shallows around rocky areas and some deep holes. Many properties back on to the river but as it is a bit low you'll probably not be trespassing unless they own the other side too - even then I think the law's on your side. #Most people out there are pretty friendly though.
If you're a pig shooter the farmer's may even welcome some help in that area too - just ask them.
