    corindi and south west rocks

    Gday all
Im heading down to corindi beach for a week on boxing day, and am sure to pop into the red rock estuary for a bit of fishing. Will also spend two weeks after that down at south west rocks fishing for whiting.
what rig and bait do you guys reccomend for fishing at corindi beach off the rocks, and at the estuary at red rocks?... i havent a clue what ill go for, probably whiting or something like that.
Have set myself up with 20lb line on an abu 6500C4 with a nice short morrum rod about 5'6.
any tips would be great as at the moment im just thinking of going out on a limb with a size 6 mustad and a sinker and swivel rig.
    cheers

Haynesy, I'd be trying for one of the blue groper that the area is well known for, a bucket of crabs from the rocks at low tide, and float them around in the wash at the edge of the rocks, and hang on. Better in winter but ive got them in summer too. Might be worth taking a lighter rod if your after whiting, 20lb is a bit of an overkill. there is usually a good gutter if you walk north of the estuary at red rock about 500m or so, get away from the crowds a bit.

    Haynesy,
Check out the Becoming a Better Fisherman section of this website. Click on the styles of fishing for equipment and tips, and click on the various spieces for rigs. Link:

Not sure what sort of rock fishing you intend to do at Corindi, but a 12 ft rod and a 6 1/2 inch alvey would suit you better off the beach or raised rock platforms. Only go with someone who is experienced if you haven't done it before.
Your current setup sounds more suitable to fishing for jewies out of a tinnie. 20lb is certainly too heavy for whiting. Try 6 to 8lb and the rigs suggested in the link above.
    Cheers,
    Jeff

    sharkbait and Gorilla in manilla,
thanks alot for your advice, i always go overkill when it comes to gear... didnt realise it could be detrimental to my fishing if i got a stronger rod/reel/line. Reason for my buying the stronger and more "buff" gear is that next year june im off on a fishing trip with me uncle in papua new guinea...and were certainly not going to be going for whiting!... lol.
Ill also be taking my old and faithful alvey setup...so im hoping to do a tad beach fishing while im down there. thing is ive never been there so i dont know what geography im going to be running into... so i was trying to cover all angles.

p.s. sharkbait... the groper you were talking about "float them around in the wash at the edge of the rocks" did you mean at red rock, or should i try my luck in rocky areas all along that 5 kilometres of coast ill be frequenting between corindi and red rock...

apoligies for all the questions guys... bit overwhelming all the different stuff as im used to just using me mates gear and never had to think about it... just cast and pull lol.

    cheers, rhys

yeah i wasnt very specific. Best only to try for groper and drummer on a flat day with little swell. If there are big waves breaking through the spot then you probably wont get one. Its hard to explain but what you are looking for is deep channels and gutters like potholes that run through the rocky outcrops, heaps of weed, cunje etc. basically as far out on the rocks as you can get. I'll see if i can find a photo of what i mean.

    thanks sharkbait,
im looking forward to going for some bigger and stronger fish than whiting and stuff... but seeing im pretty new i figured i may aswell start small...thats why my main interest is in whiting... but seeing ill be down there for three weeks... a shot at some groper sounds like some interesting fishing. might try a lure or two in the estuary... might get lucky!

    Haynesy,
Link to a bit of info on the Corindi / Red Rock area. Just click on the names on the map at the bottom for others.

Great neck of the woods. We camp at Minnie Waters often when I get back to aus. If you have a 4wd you can take a run along the beach at Minnie toward Sandon River. Also Pebbly beach and Station Creek are great places.

    Cheers,
    Jeff
