Guys were heading to Morton on Saturday night to fish the drop off then heading 0-dark hours to the reefs.
Anyone else with plans to be over at Morton Saturday night ??
My mate Greg has organised a few other boats so look out for the flotilla.
P.s I will eventualy get the pictures of our Snapper and Morwong from the last trip uploaded......
Cheers Lee
Any of u guys get out there on the weekend ??
I think we where the only D@#kheads to be over there in a tinnie.
We got swamped twice and it took us from 4.30pm till 9.00pm to get from Cabbage tree ck to the point past Bulwer.
I have never been out in water that crazy.
Ended up finally heading back to Tanga's and hiding behind some big boats.
Oh and the trip back on Sunday was even worse.
Just to top things of I smashed my finger on the boat and Greg my buddy left a berly trail from cape morton back to Brissy.
At least we didnt have to worry about cleaning fish when we got home...Not a single one.
Anyone know how much it is for a set of golf clubs ???
Sounds crazy Abalone The bay can be pretty dangerous at times, sounds like you encountered it at what might not have even been its worst. We've been there too, but that was on our way back from there... never again But the fact that you were on your way out, got swamped twice, it was dark and conditions weren't getting any better maybe a change of plans should have been put in place or pulled the pin altogether. I'm sure you're thinking the same thing now anyway
Maybe you should do a bit more planning next time. Check the weather before you leave, check the observations out in the bay at that time, etc. If conditions don't suit and you're still keen for some fish head to a river or to the more protected waters of the southern bay, 'pin, or pumicstone passage.
Better luck on the fish front next time though Conditions aren't looking too bad this week for an early morning run, I wouldn't be out there on Saturday arvo though. Are you gonna get back on the horse and redeem yourself? By the sounds of it you might need a new decky
DC
DC has it exactly right. You have to follow the reports and adjust accordingly.
Always have a plan B is my advice.
eg,, I also headed out to Morton on Saturday. I don't usally travel that far because I only have a 4.5 runabout and it does not handle the chop that well going into it, but is fine running with it.
So this is what I did. (before I headed out I know that I would be coming home in a north easterly)
I headed out after lunch and with the chop the way it was, I thought I may end up at Mud, but I really wanted to fish a few spots north of the measured mile. Luckily at the same time I was leaving the Brisbane river a container ship was also leaving, so I hitched a lift. They only do about 20km on the way out and then speed up along morton. That is about all I could do anyway bashing into the chop, so I did it in the nice flat wake 50 - 100m behind it. hardly any revs and great fuel economy. The return trip only used 21 litres. Got to 90 degrees from where I wanted to go, and then turned 90 degrees left and only had a few k's to my spot. I could have hitched all the way to where you ended up.
Anyway, then as it was heading towards dark, and I had a good squire for dinner, I surfed my way back to Mud in the twylight, fished sunset at Mud, and then headed back to the ramp an hour after dark. Mud back to the ramp is not far and pretty safe. The point is that I realised there was no future staying that far from home in that very average sea conditions so pushed it a bit in the daylight but went for safety heading towards dark.
I know it is very tempting with a new boat and all, but if you have too many very average trips it can really put you off.
Hang in there but be flexible and it will be much more enjoyable.
Here's another example,,, Have been out fishing with Commodore (not The Commodore, but the original Commodore) from this site a few months ago, and we headed out in average conditions. Had a good time all the same, but everything said we would not catch a fish, which we didn't. We were planning to go out last night as the conditions were looking good, but as the afternoon kicked on, the wind picked up. Having already arranged to get off work, it was a tough call, but we decided to not go and try again another day.
