Am thinking of going to Hinchenbrook in April. I have a 4.5 tinny with 40hp . Would I be better off going to the Lucinda end or the Cardwell end . Also what species would be dominant in April? Also a good place to stay with room to park boat?-Thanks, Beatle
Both Lucinda and Cardwell are both good options. Both have close reefs about 25 mile out. Cardwell is more protected I think. I would go Cardwell, Kookaburra Craavan Park
If stopping at Lucinda, The Arches units is where I stop- 2 bedroom self contained opposite waterfront with undercover parking for both vehicle and boat, contact Felix Reitano real estate at Ingham for booking- cost us $500 for 2 weeks in the front unit last June.

Always stayed down at Lucinda. The entrance to Dungeness was very shallow last year - this was only towards the bottom of the tide though. The ramp at Cardwell is a good all tide ramp.
4.5m tinny is spot on I reckon. The Palms are very close from Lucinda end. Catching fish can be tricky - so much country to fish. Are you bait fishing or luring??
We had a real good run of weather 2 years back and ran out to Britomart reef in my 4.55m Hornet and had a 4.35 Hornet follow us out - 46km out and 46km back - it was that calm. All we could manage though was bloody coral trout
JackLivesHere- Pity about those pesky coral trout. I will be doing a bit of everything bait, tossing lures, s/p's ,trolling whatever. This will be my first trip up that way and it will be just a learning experiance. I will mainly fish the creeks and the chanell. Will be just the wife and myself going and she freaks out if the water gets any rougher than a ripple. Will it be closed seasan for Barra then?I am going about mid. April. Is this a good time to go? I might spend a few days at both Cardwell end and Lucinda end and on my way back south Iwill give the Barra a try at Peter Faust.-Beatle
You will be right for barra that time of year. Depends on how much rain they get as to where to fish. If they have not had much rain fish right up the small creeks and throw lures at small twiggy branches and snags. The main thing when you are fishing for barra is to work the lure slow. We use small lures up there. Flatz Rats 10's are my pick for snag bashing. They don't float too quick. The idea is to get it in the snag and rip it down and then give it a twitch. Most hits will be as it rises.
Haycock Island - about 15km from Lucinda - has good deep water around it and is great place for SP's. We've caught good barra (85cm) Fingermark, GT's, Queenfish, etc all in this small area. When the tide is ripping out, the baitfish shelter on the downward side of the current. It's not uncommon to see BIG queenies smashing them up.
Take a GPS - Hinchinbrook is a very big place with lots of little creeks that look the same - not a good place to be caught out after dark. Believe me there are some BIG crocs in the channel.
That book, North Australian Fish Finder, is good reference. It has plenty of good spots in the channel marked - about $25 I think.
Got a nice barra at Faust just before Xmas. 115cm - casting lures in the timber. Definitely not for the faint hearted.
The entrance to dungenness was shallow last week. We hit bottom on a couple of occasions, and we weren't smack on low tide either. However, its only a small section. We just floored it over the section and sprayed mud about 10 meters into the air. Woops, is that still in the 6 knots / no wash area?
Beatle,
Options are endless at Lucinda. You can stay at the Van park which has camping though to air/con cabind for $60/night to the optimum which are the new units at the ramp.
Let me know when you are up this way and weather permiting will take you out wide. New Hainea 600K turns up on Sunday
We are staying at Mudbrick Manor , Cardwell so we will miss the lighters! Going to spend a few days fishing with Jimbo Lee, although the tides are neap tides, it is the only time we can get away.(31st. March, 1st. 2nd April.).-Beatle
The Hinchinbrook has it's own set of rules and is unlike any other place i've fished. I wasted years fishing there using tactics that work 100 k's down the road. If you can afford it hire a guide for the day to set you on the right course.
