    Fresh Pilchards

Stopped at Morgans this morning, noticed they've got fresh whole pilchards on ice at the moment for $5.00 a kilo. Mullet fillets were up there though at $6.00 a kilo.

    Hello

Are you sure that they are fresh and not already been frozen and thawed. I asked the question last Friday and was told that the pilchards and sqid had been frozen. Pillies were a bit second rate. Are they usually fresh and I was just there at the wrong time

    Nat,
I'm not sure but now you mention it an awful lot of seafood gets snap frozen before coming into shore. I guess I made the assumption after seeing a heap of butterflied pillies and I normally associate this with being done fresh in the processing sheds. As to the quality give me a moment while I step to the fridge......................................nup still seem ok. I'll bag up a couple of small portions when I get home and into the freezer for later.

Salt them down with Rock salt first, they'll last more than one outing then. I lay my pillies i get off my bait store on newspaper in the sun, and pile on the rock salt, into a take-away container, then wrapped in a few pieces of newspaper and into the freezer. They dont actually get to freeze due to the salt, and are like leather when you use them, which results in more hook-ups.

    Re: Fresh Pilchards

I paid $7.95kg for Mullet fillets today at the Fish Factory - up from $4.50kg mid last week. Green Prawns were only $10kg so i thought 1/2 a k was good value for the breambos tomorrow!!

    Re: Fresh Pilchards

I was reading in the paper the other day that using fresh green imported prawns for bait or burley could be bad for our native stocks re white spot disease or something..... perhaps something worth doing some research on... the article reckons they mix local with imports so should play it safe and not chuck any green prawn stuff in... which is a real bugger!!!

Check out 'DPI prawn alert' thread, in the general chat section. These import prawns are capable of decimating our wild stock, don't use 'em as bait!

    Hi

I've read those threads/articles and it seems to relate to the prawns bought in Supermarkets rather than your Fish Markets/Factories. I bought mine from the Fish Factory so they should be good... (cross-fingers).

    Re: Fresh Pilchards

They sell 'em at the fish markets/factories, plenty go through the one down at Colmslie on the river. Only way to know is to ask, or maybe there is some differing that sets them apart, i haven't studied them that closely..

    Re: Fresh Pilchards

just a thought for you guys using green imported prawns... why don't you through them into a put of boiling water first and cook them as cooked prawns are the bee's knees for bream...... well they used to be when I fished for bream I would prefer cooked over green anytime and then there would be less chanch of affecting out prawn stocks

    Shayned,

Next time don't buy the fillets. They also have mullet barrels. I always ask first and always they have been fresh, not thawed. The barrels are filleted, scaled and heads chopped off. All you need to do is slice off each side and you have your fillet. And a frame you can chop up for burley as a bonus. These are sold for $1,99/kg. I don't know why they are always so cheap, but not complaining. Definately the best way to buy.

As for the squid, they almost always freeze it and just thaw when needed. The quality even though once frozen is always great so last time I bought a 5kg block, and just separated into thirds at home. Now I have morgans squid in my freezer that when I thaw it it will be exactly the same without the need for a trip to Scarbrough. Interesting to note that the squid can be 6 months or more old. It must be in the freezing as I have never had a problem with fish wanting Morgans squid.
