Re: Fishing the Bay Mon- Wed Next Week
Well that was fun, picked up the 5.99 Ploycraft from the hire place on the Gold Coast and towed her up to Raby Bay Boat Ramp - near the Air Sea Rescue - let me say what a great boat ramp.
Put in and started on our journey across the bay past peel then up the rainbow channel towards our camp site at Amity.
Set up camp and loaded the boat to hit the water for the afternoon tide. When over to a couple of spots I have fished before in the Rous channel. Picked up some small squire, shovel nose sharks and 1 damn big sting ray.
Ah well can't pick and choose, had a great time. Wind started picking up and time to pull anchor. Watched the clouds come in and was slowly getting blacker over Brisbane and then looked south at a total white out over Straddie. First night there 25-30 knot wind gusts with belting rain, boat left high and dry on the beach for the following morning until high tide so missed a great tide for the Rouse, however on the plus side fished off the Jetty at Amity and picked up a bucket load of good sized winter whiting , yum yum.
Was a great bloody big trawler parked on the end of the jetty so no fishing with livies off the end - a local told me they had been the for a while and did not seem like moving. Did not realise that boats could moor permanently on a public jetty > > >
Anyway, That afternoon headed out in beautiful conditions over to the Harry Atkinson reef. Sounded out reasonable spot to anchor.Threw the burly bomb over the side and dropped lines. Took about a minute for the baby snapper to start, must have caught and released over a hundred of the little buggers. Put out a larger bait and it got hit by what seemed to be a much more reasonable fish. 1 nice little snapper just shy of legal but put up a great account for itself. Then the wind started so after the day before we decided to up anchore and start the trip back up the rous and over to amity. By about 7pm there was no wind and the area around Amity was glassy smooth, decided could not be stuffed getting the boat out again so retired after a couple of scotches and rounds of poker to get out early this morning. Started raining at about 3am all the way through till about 7am - I have since decided to apply to peter Beattie as his official rainmaker as anytime I go on holidays I break a drought .
Anyway, packed up camp and filled the boat with gear and headed off for our last mornings fishing. Headed down to peel island and had afish around there for a while. Pick up at Raby Bay was due for 2.30, but hey guess what Storm coming straight up from the Coast, quick cal to the driver and arranged pick up at 12pm.
So on the fishing front, bugger all. Really impressed with the Polycraft especially in choppy seas. Really smooth ride and with the 140hp suzuki 4 stroke on the back used just shy of 100litres over the 3 days with a fair bit of running around.
Will definitely be hiring this boat again, and recommend to anyone that does not own a boat give the guys at Qld Trailer Boat Hire just near Harbourtown.
Already planning the next trip, hopefully further up the bay chasing Cobes.
